PRESENTATIONS
13-00560 Presentation by the 2013 City of Aurora Interns
Director of Communications, Clayton Muhammad, introduced members of the
summer intership programs for 2013 present at today's meeting, and presented
these students with certificates of appreciation for their service and dedication
to the City of Aurora during the past few months:
Eric Mangan, a senior at Aurora University majoring in Criminal Justice and
Pre-law, worked at Special Events and Community Services.
Kayle Reigr, also a senior at Aurora University, majoring in Art with a minor in
Museum Studies, worked with Public Arts Director Rena Church, spending a
great deal of time on the GAR Museum archives.
Sherwood Edwards, a Public Administration student at NIU, has worked with
the Budgeting and Accounting divisions of the Finance departmnet.
Alex Perez, a junior at Columbia College, worked with Public Information and
ACTV.
Angela Lang will be graduating high school in 2015, and plans on studying at
Northwestern University. She has worked with the Public Information office
and the Mayor's office.
Kyle DeVry heads off to college this Saturday - he will be studying Political
Science at the University of Illinois in Champaign. He worked at the Aldermen's
office over the summer.
The above interns expressed their gratitude to the departments they served,
the office of the Mayor and the members of the Council for the opportunity
they were afforded. All interns have acquired valuable knowledge during their
internships, a greater understanding of the work of the Municipality, and an
increased sense of admiration and love towards a city that, in the words of Mr.
Perez, is "not only growing, but flourishing."
Mayor Weisner thanked all interns for their service, and said that this was a
great group of students who stepped up and succeeded at handling difficult

towards the STEM Academy. Alderman O'Connor said in his recommendation
that this is a great opportunity for the community and everyone involved.
Mayor Weisner spoke about this item as an investment, a visionary idea that
came from Aurora University. Mayor Weisner explained that participants in the
program will be students from four different schools, and that not only will
they specialize in STEM curriculum, but teachers will be afforded the
opportunity to come and teach, increase their credentials, and propagate STEM
education within their own school districts. Mayor Weisner recognized the
hard work that Aurora University has put towards this project for many years.

additional revenues are needed for the projects required to bring the City of
Aurora into compliance with this act.
Mayor Weisner explained this is an obligatory program implemented by the US
EPA. It has been in existance for at least a couple decades - it started on the
East Coast, moved towards the Midwest, and reached Aurora approximately
two years ago. We are obligated to move forward to be in compliance.
