CITY OF CORAL SPRINGS, FLORIDA CORAL SPRINGS CITY COMMISSION RETREAT SUMMARY Wednesday, February 12, 2025 Multi-Purpose Room, Public Safety and 9:00 a.m. Public Works Complex 4150 NW 120 Avenue Coral Springs, FL 33065 Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 9:10 a.m. Roll Call Mayor Scott Brook (Joined by phone at 8:58 a.m. Arrived in-person at 10:10 a.m.) Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen Commissioner Shawn Cerra Commissioner Joshua Simmons (Departed at 3:28 p.m.) Commissioner Joseph McHugh Also in attendance: City Manager Catherine Givens City Attorney John Hearn City Clerk Georgia Elliott City Manager Catherine Givens welcomed attendees and provided opening remarks. Mayor Brook requested the use of his title to fight against antisemitism and to travel to Israel. Members of the Commission requested further information. There was consensus to allow Vice Mayor Bowen the use of her title to support fundraising activities for Hate Ends Now. There was consensus to revise recognition sponsorship from individual sponsorship to the City Commission as a body on regular meeting agendas. Agenda Items Staff gave presentations and engaged the Commission on the following topics: • A review of the proposed Center for the Arts Master Plan was led by Dale Pazdra. • A discussion on the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was presented by Stephen Dyer, Andrew Dunkiel, and Nicole Giordano. • A conversation on the city’s communication strategy on engagement was led by Lynne Martzall. • A discussion on Commission engagement focus areas was led by Catherine Givens. • A review of Commission Protocols was led by Luwam Ghermay – feedback was received and will be reflected in the next protocol publication. • A discussion on term limits was led by Dale Pazdra and Andrew Dunkiel. Commission Communications • Commissioner Simmons gave a presentation on the National League of Cities Executive Committee. • Discussion on Hate Ends Now (a mobile Holocaust event) continued. • A request to incorporate past elected officials in future events such as State of the City was made. • Consensus was reached to recognize the Florida Panther Warriors. • Mayor Brook announced his upcoming Mental Wellness Networking Alliance (MWNA) event on May 30 at 9 a.m. at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. He noted that he will file the necessary ethics forms for his participation in the event. • Issues concerning city aesthetics and potential code issues throughout the city were addressed. • Staff addressed the painting cycle and process for City Hall and park facilities. • Staff provided feedback regarding the cost to cover the Cypress Pickle Ball Courts. • Conference updates were provided. • Staff provided feedback on the Sister Cities program and will continue to complete further research. • Staff provided an update on the canal water levels throughout the city. • Staff will meet with Commissioner Cerra to review the results of his park visits throughout the city. • Staff will provide an overview of the services provided at the city employee clinic at a future workshop. • Personal messages from members of the Commission in local magazines were discussed. • Discussion on the installation of cameras to check the weather on pickle ball courts ensued. • There was consensus to recognize the Coral Springs Youth Soccer (CSYS) program at a future meeting. • Members of the Commission remarked on their positive experience with this year’s strategic planning retreat.
