HVAC COMMITTEE
MINUTES
Tuesday, fuly 1.6, 2024,2:00 p.m.
MEMBERSPRESENT: Pat Hudgens, Chris Erickson.
MEMBERS ABSENT: Christopher Benjamin
STAFF PRESENT: Marc Mylott, Greg Moory Doug Hiruichs, David Mulcahy,

GUEST: None
CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by Pat Hudgens at 2:05 p.m., in the First Floor
Conference Room at City Hall, 150 Dexter Court, Elgiru IL.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes of the June 25,2024, meeting were presented. A motion was made by
Chris Erickson and seconded by Pat Hudgens and the minutes of that meeting were
unanimously approved.
Old Business:
COMMERCIAL KITCHEN HOOD INSPECTIONS:
After discussiory it was agreed by the committee to add an amendment to
Section 506.1: All Type I commercial kitchen hoods must be installed by a
licensed contractor. A preconstruction meeting must be scheduled with the
City's inspectors prior to any construction. At the time of rough inspectioo a
certificate of installation inspection report provided by the City and
completed by the installer must be provided for review. Approved shop
drawings for the hood must be on site and presented to the inspector at the
time of all inspections. It was noted that Pat Hudgens would update and send
a template for the certificate of installation.
FLEXIBLE DUCTWORK HVAC SYSTEM FOR RESIDENCES:
After discussion, it was agreed by the committee members that no changes to
the previously amended IMC and IRC codes are required.
CENTRAL AIR RETURNS:
After discussiory it was agreed by the committee to amend the IMC/IBC to
expand the current IRC M1602.1.1 requirement to reflect that central returns
are prohibited in all R uses.
MINI SPLIT - HVAC SYSTEM:
After discussion it was agreed to add to the amendments:
1) If a ductless split system is to be used as prirnary source of heat, condersation lines
must run to an interior drain.
2) Exposed refrigerant line sets greater than 5 feet mounted along the exterior of a
building shall be covered and protected.
3) If a ductless split system is to be used as the primary source of heat, manual J heat
calculations must be submitted to evidence compliance or supplemental heat sources
must be provided.
4) Condensing units must be elevated at least 6 inches off the unit pad with weather-
rated material that is designed for that purpose.
5) If a ductless split system is to be used as the primary source of heat, Manufacturer's
specifications shall be on site and available at the time of inspection.
SMOKE DETECTION IN SUPPLY AIR DUCTS:
It was agreed that the curent amended Section 606,2.1 is to be revised to include smoke
detectors to be installed on both supply and retum sides of any system greater than 2001
CFM. No action required, but It was also noted that an economizer is required on
systems 4 ton.s and above per the new Energy Code.
zuRNACE AND WATER HEATER VENTILATION THROUGH
EXISTING CHIMNEYS:
After discussion, it was agreed by the cornrnittee members that this Section
should remain as is. A suggestion was made that the quick guide available to
the public be updated to address liners. David Mulcahy will address with
staff.
CONDENSING BOILER:
After discussiory it was agreed by the committee members that this Section
should remain as in code.
FILTER REOUIREMENTS:
After discussion, it was agreed by the committee members that the
amendment should remain as is.
PUBLICCOMMENTS:
There were no public comments presented at this meeting.
ADIOURNMENT:
A motion was made by Pat Hudgens to adjourn the meeting at 3:10 p.m., and
seconded by Chris Erickson. The motion passed unanimously and the meeting was
adioumed.
