AGENDA ITEM # E.1
For consideration with possible action on the selection of jury members for the Poet Laureate.
BACKGROUND
The Poet Laureate Request for Qualifications was approved by the Common Council on October 7, 2025.
From the pool of submitted qualifications, the Public Arts Commission will select up to five finalists who will
be invited to submit a detailed proposal for a two-year term. An external jury composed of three poetry and
literary experts will review the finalist proposals and recommend a candidate for appointment as Poet
Laureate. It is further recommended that juries be partially comprised of individuals from outside the local
geographic area to promote impartiality in the selection process.
Jury recommendation; Amy Mazarriello, Owner of Lion's Mouth Bookstore, Brenda Cárdenas, Wisconsin
Poet Laureate, and Nakeysha Roberts Washington, Owner and Creative Director of Genre: Urban Arts
Magazine.
