Draft Agenda Sister Cities, Assembly Advisory Board Meeting Minutes (REVISED) August 15, 2016; 5:00 p.m. Hospital Foundation Conference Room Committee Members: Sue Baxter (Co-Chair) Marsha Squires (UAS Liaison) Eli Olson (Secretary) Barbara Burnett (Member) Chloe Watson (treasurer) Miranda (member) I. Call to order a. Meeting was called to order at 5:10pm II. Agenda Changes a. Add Friendship City discussion to the agenda III. Approval of the Minutes from Eli a. Minutes approved for prior meetings IV. New member of Sister Cities Committee a. Marsha Squires was just approved by CBJ as the newest member of the Sister Cities Committee as of August 1st, 2016. V. Airport display case – Change out a. New Display case in Assembly Chambers – Meeting with Mayor i. Was given approval by the mayor b. Inventory from Sister City Items i. Barbara has compiled an inventory list of the gifts that Juneau has received over the years from different cities, from official sister cities, and friendship cities and just miscellaneous gifts, even Christmas cards to our mayor. c. Sign-post i. The status is currently unknown, as Marsha cannot find it downtown, she has promised to continue looking for it, or talk to Travel Juneau to see if it was taken down and why. VI. Meeting with Mayor Ken Koelsch a. Has not officially happened yet, only discussed the display case only, but a plan is in place to meet him and discuss Sister Cities goals and objectives. VII. Kalibo Update a. Direct contact i. Susan met with Rachelle and Vicky, from the Filcom Board, and they believe they can best contribute to helping Kalibo by continuing fund raising. They also agreed to allow us to contact Mayor Lachica directly. b. Cathy Munoz office contact i. Vicky from the Filcom board would like for Cathy Munoz to receive a special recognition award from the University of Aklan, which requires contacting several agencies to fill out the appropriate paperwork and submitting it. ii. Marsha has agreed to contact Cathy Munoz to discuss the J0- visas versus the F-visas and how they work, And will also attempt to contact Vicky from Filcom to meet both of them at Cathy’s office to explain the visas and how they work. iii. The plan to potentially send professors from Alaska to Kalibo and vice versa. c. Sanitation contact i. Kalibo is asking for assistance with their sanitation works, as they have not working landfill d. Presents for this fall i. e. Chamber of Commerce f. Teacher exchange – K-12 g. Rotary Club h. Survey of Kalibo Juneau residents i. Consider using Survey monkey to survey the Filipino population of Juneau to see how many of them would be behind an improved relationship with Kalibo and if any of them would be willing to help out. ii. Our committee also wishes to ask Mayor Lachica what it is that he would like Juneau to help him with specifically and then use his answers as part of the survey i. Brainstorm other possibilities i. Possibly create a contact list from Juneau to send to Kalibo and ask for it to be reciprocated so there is a working line of communication between the cities. VIII. Becoming a Coast Guard City a. Table this item until it can be reassessed. IX. Friendship city a. A friendship city is where our city has an informal relationship to conduct business, cultural exchanges, or otherwise communicate with on a regular basis. b. The Juneau school district currently has a teacher exchange relationship with the schools in Japan: in Nishiokoppei City in northern Hokkaido, where the teacher are sent for 1-2 years all their housing is paid for and they are paid a salary, and the teachers teach in the elementary schools and the high schools. c. It is the consensus of our committee that we should attempt to collaborate with the school district to make the arrangement with the Japanese city a more formal arrangement. X.
