Gerhardt Community Room Environmental Concerns Committee Trustee Mike Fugiel - Chairperson Trustee Reid Foltyniewicz - Alternate Chairperson Diana Lavaque, Nancy Schukat, Winnie Lyons, Darlene Bartt, Jason Cooper, Dustin Smith, Daniel Richardt and Dana Moreau Staff Liaison: Dave Gorman Environmental Concerns Minutes October 22, 2013 Committee 1.0 Call to Order and Pledge of Allegiance Meeting called to order by Chairperson Fugiel at 7:00 PM. 2.0 Roll Call Dave Gorman Public Works Paul Kuehlenz Public Works Mike Brink Waste Management Present 6 - Trustee Mike Fugiel, Nancy Schukat, Jason Cooper, Dustin Smith, Daniel Richardt, and Dana Moreau Absent 3 - Diana Lavaque, Darlene Bartt, and Winnie Lyons 3.0 Public Participation 4.0 Approval of Minutes A motion was made by Nancy Schukat, seconded by Jason Cooper, that the minutes be approved . The motion passed by an unanimous vote. 5.0 Unfinished Business 050616 Current Solid Waste Contract - Update Mike Brink: presented the waste tonnage spreadsheet to the committee members. Moreau: questioned how accurate the contamination rate is and how it is determined. Brink: explained that it is an average number reported by the recycling center that does not and really can not specifically relate to Lombard. Gorman: has talked with Mike Brink about scheduling a tour of Waste Management's landfill and recycling center. Calendars were coordinated at the meeting for possibly 11/19 or 11/20. Brink: will check with those facility managers and confirm with Dave Gorman to relay to committee members. Gorman: asked if there were any comments on the draft Solid Waste Reference Guide? Richardt: suggested adding that residents may also ask for a 96-gal recycling toter. Gorman: will be placing this Guide in the next issue of the PRIDE. 6.0 New Business 130308 2013 Recycling Extravaganza - AAR Saturday, September 21, 2013 Mike Brink: stopped into Batteries Plus to ask if they would accept Village of Lombard Page 1 Environmental Concerns Minutes October 22, 2013 Committee alkaline batteries. They do not. They told him, and their website also states, that those batteries should just be discarded in the trash. Gorman: has worked out an arrangement with P.A. Crimson, a fire services company in Lombard, to accept all types of tanks at the next Recycling Extravaganza. These include fire extinguishers, natural gas, scuba, etc. and they do not have to be empty. In addition, Goodwill agreed to accept reusable furniture and white goods. 130478 Fall Cleanup & Invasive Species Removal on IPP & GWT on 11/9/2013 Gorman: will coordinate volunteers over the next week. Mike Fugiel, Jason Cooper, Dustin Smith and Paul Kuehlenz will help too. 130546 Sustainability Framework Review Institute for Local Governments Framework Gorman: asked if members had questions on or suggestions for Lombard's Sustainability Framework based on a review of the Institute for Local Government's model framework. Fugiel: asked the committee to hold this item and discuss it at the next meeting in order to allow more time to prepare. Gorman: suggested that residential energy programs be a main focus for the upcoming year since there are generous State grants that are easily accessed but underutilized. Besides reducing our carbon footprint, these grant programs would improve our housing stock and save residents money. 7.0 Other Business Schukat: shared a thank you letter from Hines Hospital for allowing them to once again collect books at the Recycling Extravaganza. Moreau: stated that she would like to receive an electronic version of the agenda packets only. She did not receive the e-mailed packet last week. 8.0 Information Only Cooper: distributed a brochure for the proposed improvements at Hammerschmidt School. 9.0 Adjournment A motion was made by Jason Cooper, seconded by Nancy Schukat, that this meeting be adjourned at 7:57 PM.
