Staff comments “the mural is dated, antiquated and is not a reflection of our community.” Senior Center staff would like to remove the mural. Historical Narrative: Mimi Farrelly wrote a grant for that project in conjunction with the Senior Center manager at the time, Nancy Ceridwyn. They put out a request to people who painted in various classes here at the Senior Center; all of the painters were women and were older adults at the time, so it is a unique group from 1982. All of the things in the mural itself came from photos at the Museum- the women who painted it went through the archives at the Museum. They did a lot of research before putting those mural panels together. We are aware that in 1982, the painting they made was not very diverse; they worked with the materials they had at the time. Michele believes all of the women who painted it have died, and Edith was the last surviving artist but did pass away. The women really bonded over the process of painting it. The Museum has been contacted to consider the artwork’s inclusion to the city museum historical collection. Following review, the item has not been identified as appropriate for recommendation to the collection. As the artwork has been on display in public space it is AIPP who procedurally will determine removal of the artwork. It is staff recommendation to formally deaccession the object.
