Background:
The artist, Meg White, is still midway through working on the hand sculpture. She expects to be
finished in October. She continues to share regular YouTube videos from her channel about its
making, found at www.youtube.com/@possmom8. The MAC should consider sharing an update with
the public with some video clips.
Next steps:
• Raising Chicago Concrete will be installing the concrete footer for $2,500. Jeff Carrier in
Public Works was very helpful in negotiating the price.
• A final location was determined between Staff (Colleen and Public Works) and S.
Kalmanovsky. See mockups below. The location was sent to the artist, and she is currently
reviewing and will provide comments. The reasons for the proposed placement and angle:
o Crane Reach: Site is well within the crane reach from the adjacent roadway.
o Backdrop: Gives the best possible "backdrop" for people posing with or taking pictures
of the hand. Background looks out over the rest of the park/natural area.
o View from Hand: If you're sitting on the star, you're angled towards the creek and the
park across the street, which is also a nice view.
o Avoiding the Shopping Center View (North): The orientation of the star makes it so the
shopping center to the north (green roof) and large parking lot is not visible when
you're sitting in the star, nor is it visible when you take photos of the star. Angling the
hand more east-west would put that shopping center in one of those views, so we
chose a more north-south angle.
o Face People Entering Pathway: The palm roughly faces the entrance to the Pollinator
Garden, so it will look inviting to people entering the pathway.
o Erosion Barrier Avoidance: We aren't able to push it any further west (towards the
entrance pathway), as that part of the pathway is getting reconstructed this fall and
will have an erosion control buffer we need to stay out of.
