The actual establishment date was May 23, 2016, and the first meeting was on August 16, 2016. A social media post sharing some of the MAC's accomplishments and photos was posted on May 23. Other updates: • Banners: Public Works printed the MAC a banner for hanging in the pop-up tent and a 2x3 sandwich board sign listing MAC's upcoming events this year. Both were used at Spring Into Summer. • T-Shirts: The t-shirts were ordered from Ultimate Screen Printing for $505. They originally gave an ETA of mid-June. Public Art Plan No updates. Lure of the Local The next step for Lure of the Local is to develop an application form, which staff is working on. This Page 9 of 24 year, we hope to create a form that efficiently translates to curation, artist emailing, and label creation. If we can't find a solution, our fallback is the typical Google Form. The save the date with a theme announcement has been posted on social media: Lure of the Local 5 is on the horizon! Save the date for this year's exhibition and get an early look at the theme: "Love Letters". Whether it inspires a brand-new piece, helps you see existing work in a new light, or simply gets ideas flowing, we invite artists to begin exploring what Love Letters might mean through their own creative lens. Lure of the Local is an annual, curated art exhibition that highlights the creative practices of artists who live and work among us – our teachers, neighbors, friends, and fellow community members. Save the date! Join us for the opening reception on Friday, October 16, 2026. The exhibition and residency will once again take place at the Archer Business Center (175 N. Archer, Mundelein). Applications will open by June 15, 2026, and are free to submit. Artists of all mediums and skill levels are encouraged to apply. Artist Residencies will return for a second year, with details to be announced soon. New this year, we are also seeking proposals for an interactive community artwork that engages visitors of all ages. We are pleased to announce this year's theme: Love Letters. From the quiet anticipation of writing a love letter to the joy of receiving one, this simple act captures something deeply human. Few things express longing, connection, and vulnerability quite like it; art offers a powerful way to explore those emotions. Let this theme be a springboard for your own interpretation of what Love Letters mean to you. Your subject might be a person, a pet, a garden, a season, a favorite meal, or even a fleeting moment. What you love—and how you choose to honor it—is each artist's unique vision. Page 10 of 24 In this fast-paced age of texting, the idea of a love letter is nostalgic and tactile, present. What makes you pause in awe? What image or thing can truly embody love? Is love a fairy tale or fantasy? What artistic process do you lose yourself in like falling in love? We look forward to seeing where this theme takes you! For questions, contact cmalec@mundelein.org or (847) 949-3289. Allison Hausladen Workshop One other update – Allison Hausladen asked whether the MAC would be open to hosting a repeat of her mobile workshop Watercolors at Courtland Commons. It was an outdoor watercolor painting workshop of the wildlife at Courtland Commons, featuring a guest speaker (Amanda Orenchuk) who spoke about the development of the stormwater basin and park. The original workshop was sparsely attended due to weather and late notice planning. If the MAC is interested in hosting Allison again (outside of the structure of Lure of the Local), it would be helpful to have one commissioner assigned to liaising with Allison. She is self-sufficient, but will need assistance choosing a date and developing messaging for social media. UPDATE: No action on this yet. Indoor Art Program At the February meeting, the MAC approved a purchase of the 3-piece collection Big Impact by Allison Hausladen, who was an artist resident and also the winner of the Critic’s Choice Award. We will be ordering a stainless steel plaque (<$100) with the title, artist, and description. The piece will be displayed at the Village Hall on the “blue wall” running along the staircase to the 2nd floor (see photo below). Stacee and Allison visited the Village Hall to determine a location. The payment has been issued and provided to the artist. The pictures are currently at Apple Frame Studio in Mundelein, which were estimated to be ready around May 18th. We have not heard from them yet. Page 11 of 24 Stars on Parade The artist, Xitlally Garcia, is working on her star. She said it’s moving a little slower than anticipated because she is busy with school. The pad is installed at the Pollinator Garden. The Beautification Committee has processed her final payment of $250 in anticipation of the completion of the star. We have asked the artist if she can finish the artwork by July 1st, and she agreed. There will be one remaining cost of $400 for the topcoat. Hand Sculpture The hand sculpture was installed on 6/11/26 by Meg White and Don Lawler. Everything went smoothly with installation. Some fun facts the artist told us: • This chunk of limestone sparkles up close, which isn't something you usually see in limestone. There are tiny crystals visible throughout the rock. She explained that limestone eventually becomes marble when heat and pressure cause it to fully crystallize, so this piece seems to be showing the early stages of that transformation. • The hand weighs 6,600 lbs. It has pins at the bottom that hold it in place, but it is mainly gravity doing the work to keep it there. • The stone comes from a limestone quarry in between Bloomington and Bedford, Indiana. • This piece of limestone has some color variegation in it, which makes it less appealing for construction, but works well for art because it gives it character. Meg said she would be willing to come back for a ribbon cutting. She is traveling Illinois in August for an unrelated project (Schaumburg area), so we are going to aim for that time while she's in the area. Page 12 of 24 By then, it's possible the new plants and trees might be in the Pollinator Garden. Unfortunately, it is temporarily off limits to the public for just a few weeks. New grass was planted all around it, so the sod needs time to establish before the public can step on it. There's a protective fence around the area with a sign. Page 13 of 24 Community Days (Booth and Parade) The craft booth this year will feature sand art to use up the MAC's large supply of sand and bottles. There will be the choice of star-shaped bottles and USA-shaped bottles. It is scheduled for Friday, July 3rd from 2-4 PM. No one is available for the day of the parade, so the MAC will be foregoing the float this year. Supplies were purchased already, so they will be used next year. Scholarship No updates at this time. Summer Shakespeare Shorts Aurelia, Dannielle, and Sue are working with The Kirk Players on logistics for this year’s Summer Shakespeare Shorts collaboration. They will report on any other updates. Staff is working through some contract issues with Santa Maria regarding the use of their lawn next to the gazebo. The performance will be held on August 21, 22, and 23 at the Kracklauer Park gazebo. The August 23rd performance will double as the Summer Concert Series feature for that week, and will be advertised on that schedule as well. Page 14 of 24 Page 15 of 24 Mundelein Grand Prix The Mundelein Grand Prix is scheduled for Monday, July 20, 2026. The MAC purchased anticipated supplies out of the previous year budget: • Spray chalk from Blick - $516.46 • Stick chalk from Eternity Arts - $107.95 • Cowbells from PPP (color: pink) - $825.54 The only other costs expected would be additional spray chalk (if the current supply doesn't match the artists' actual selection) and the honorariums for the crosswalk art. Staff is working on the form and announcement for the crosswalk art opportunities. It is expected to go live on Monday, June 15. There will be 4 available spots (two street art spots and two crosswalks). Colleen B. has assisted with finding singers for the national anthem (one for Men's Pro Race and one for Women's Pro Race). Page 16 of 24 S'Murals Tony Cannoli S'Mural Update • Ava McQuain is the chosen artist for the mural at Tony Cannoli. • Honorarium: $1,100 (artist must purchase materials, MAC will prime wall). This will come out of the MAC's budget. • Ava is currently away at school and intends to complete the mural over the summer. We need a W-9 form from her to proceed with a payment, but we have not heard back from her in a while. East Hawley S'Murals Update • Two murals are proposed on East Hawley Street: 1. West wall of 662 E. Hawley (Dragon Star/Nana's Rum Cakes) 2. East wall of 444 E. Hawley (American Patriot Store) • Honorarium: $1,500 each. This is funded by the Communications and Marketing Manager, not the MAC. • Chris, Colleen M., and the marketing manager met to narrow the selection down to two artists. Staff forwarded the art selections to the property owners. One has not responded, and the other did not like the artwork (the artwork itself and the size). We may pivot and look for an alternate location. • This project was originally intended to be done within the FY2026 budget, but was not able to move quickly enough. The murals will likely take place over the summer. Ideally, all three of the S’Murals could be installed around the same time to create efficiencies and market them simultaneously as one project. Page 17 of 24 Set Sail North / Record Sales at Farmers Market At the January meeting, Seth brought background details provided by the organizers of the Set Sail North festival and the record sale fair. He has been in contact with Tighthead Brewing Company, and will report on any updates. Seth has also reached out to MCC, as the available date (September 20) coincides with the 2nd day of the Mundelein Arts Festival. Some discussion items from the last meeting: • How to take tickets - have someone posted in the hallway leading to the side room? • Tighthead can plan to reserve a food truck for that day. • Should we provide a small stipend for the musicians? • Should a drink ticket come with admission? • The cost to rent a sound system will be about $500. • Colleen M. needs to talk to the Finance Dept. about the financial logistics (i.e. how to take in donations via sold tickets and then donate it to the Fremont Food Pantry). Seth and Chris have also been coordinating a new music-themed Farmers Market week, involving vinyl record sale booths. They will report on any updates. Page 18 of 24 Acoustic Music and Guitar Jam The Acoustic Music and Guitar Jam is scheduled for Sunday, August 2, 2026 from 1-3 PM. It will be at 22 E. Park Street at the Village's park. Poetry and Storytelling Showcase The Poetry and Storytelling Showcase is scheduled for Sunday, August 9, 2026 from 1-3 PM. It will be at 22 E. Park Street at the Village's park. Page 19 of 24 Art Pantries At a previous meeting, Chris introduced the idea for “Art Pantries”, similar to the “Free Little Libraries” concept (take artwork, leave artwork). The MAC should continue to explore this idea further. Chris has spoken to the Tool Library, who is interested in partnering and will get back to her. She met with Amanda and Colleen M. to discuss locations and process. Chris will talk to Public Works next about logistics. Staff will be preparing a resolution for the Village Board to approve permitting the use of Village property for the three art pantries. Proposed locations: • ABC Building (In front of Lure space) • Courtland Commons • Park next to Bill's Pizza Beautification Committee Updates Chris W. will report on any updates. S. Arp has volunteered to help S. Kalmanovsky. They have conducted some research and are working on developing a recommendation letter to the Village Board. A meeting was held with the Community Development Director and Village Administrator. ArtsLink North Directory Erin contacted ArtsLink North to inquire about access. No other updates at this time. Mundopoly No updates at this time. Mundelein Arts Festival (Sponsorship, etc.) No updates at this time. Art-O-Mat No updates at this time.
