CITY OF NAPERVILLE PUBLIC MEETINGS UPDATE:
On Friday, June 12, 2020, an amendment to the Open Meetings Act was signed into law. This
new law replaces the gubernatorial executive order concerning the Open Meetings Act and allows
public bodies to temporarily conduct meetings remotely during a state of emergency, subject to
certain requirements, including a determination by the head of the public body that an in-person
meeting is not practical or prudent.
Pursuant to Section 120/7(e) of the Illinois Open Meetings Act, the continuation of the Governor’s
disaster proclamation, and Mayor Chirico’s executive order determining that in-person public
meetings are not currently practical or prudent because of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are
holding January 13, 2020 Sister Cities Commission meeting remotely.
TO JOIN A MEETING: The meeting will be conducted using the Zoom Video Conferencing. You
do not need to download any software or create an account to participate.

Lance Fuhrer called the meeting to order at 6:37 p.m. .Lance read a statement
on the provisions for meeting remotely.
This was approved.
B. ROLL CALL:

E. REPORTS:
1. Approve the Sister Cities minutes of December 9, 2020
A motion was made by Bill Donofrio and seconded by Shafeek Abubaker to
approve the minutes of December 9, 2021, as amended. Motion passed.

2. Website Update - Written Agreement, Completion Deadline, Date of
Implementation, Receipt of Donations Tab, Social Media Shares
Brent Lindstrom provided an update on the Sister Cities website. It is expected
to be completed by the end of January. All three (3) websites have been
purchased including napervillesistercities.org,
napervillesistercitiesfoundation.org and napervillesistercitiescommission.org.
The e-donation button on the website has been registered. The 3 main areas of
focus for the website include; citizen engagement, commission updates and
donations.
Sami has requested some content for the website, such as pictures of the
ambulance that was donated to Cancun and other information that will show
citizen engagement for marketing purposes.

3. Cancun Unity Event - Detailed description of costs for SECA Board, Schedule
of events for celebration
Alan Lowe advised us that SECA plans to award us $10,000 to use for Cinco
De Mayo event. SECA held a subsequent meeting last week in which concluded
that the remaining $6,000 in funds will be awarded to KidsMatter.
The board has made a recommendation to hold our special event on or around
September 16th in honor of Mexican Independence Day. We discussed various
names for the event, including El Grito. Peter recommended that we inform the
Mexican Consulate about our September 16th plans and extend an invitation.
Lance thanked Alan and Sophia for all their hard work on the SECA Grant
funding application process.
Sophia has talked to Rena Calabrese about our plans and Rena agreed to
personally invite some members of our Hispanic community to join us for this
event.
4. Button Art Project
Brent Lindstrom provided an update on the Button Art project. They are working
on the project, but have not been able to engage the highschool due to
COVID-19. The portraits are complete except for the final details on the face.
5. Treasurer's Report
Julie presented the Treasurer's report, which includes a recent payment for the
purchase of our website.
6. Other Business - Lance Fuhrer
Councilwoman Gustin provided an ambulance update. She spoke to Fire Chief
Puknaitis and he said the ambulance would be released within one to two
weeks.
A task was given to organize a phone call between the fire chief in Naperville
and Cancun, including the members of the commission to arrange for the
transportation of the ambulance.
Councilwoman Gustin would like letter from the commission to City Council to
illicit support for our upcoming festival.
Peter Foyo: There are some financial pieces to work out for the transporting of
the ambulance.
Shafeek commented that we should invite some prominent members of the
community the next time we donate an ambulance.

Shruti Panse gave a presentation on the Pen Pal project. She felt that the
project is a way to keep young members engaged and was inspired by a project
she did in the 2nd grade. Once the final agreement is done between the City of
Naperville and Cancun, the commission will engage with the Cancun Public
Relations/Secretary of Education to start the project and recommend schools. .
