John Jekot called the Building & Zoning committee meeting to order at 8:00 am, he made a motion to
approve the minutes from June 5, 2014 meeting, Chuck Ostman seconded the motion and it was a
unanimous vote to approve.
Chuck Ostman gave a brief explanation to the committee that this committee is now the appeals board
for any code or amendments that may be challenged, there up until now was no appeal process in place
but with the passage of the building codes earlier this year that language was added.
Chuck Ostman then introduced Mr. Yoshida who was asking for relief from the screening of roof
top mechanical units he showed some pictures of the exterior of the building and explained
how the parapet wall would block the units from the street view and also that to do any
permanent screening there would have to be very extensive steelwork conducted to the roof
structure to provide for wind and snow load that would be imposed with new screening. After
some discussion it was voted on to approve the relief from this section of the code.
Tom Kanelos asked if we should consider adding fees to any applicant who was asking for
relief from any code or amendment, it was discussed there should be and the community
development department agreed and will come back with some recommendations.
Bruce Sylvester then gave an update of the progress of the zoning code along with the
Milwaukee avenue study, there was some discussion of how and when there would be meeting
for discussion and comments to the new zoning code along with open house meeting for the
public to be conducted.
Ross Klicker then gave and update on the Touhy Avenue corridor study and where we were in
the process.
