COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES July 14, 2011 Present: Tony Cristiano Absent: Bill Terpinas Steve Gorski Robert Thomas Steven Tremaglio Jim Hynes – Ex Officio Cathy Spadoni - Secretary Commissioner Cristiano made a motion to open the meeting; Commissioner Hynes seconded the motion. The meeting was called to order at 4:02 p.m. Approval of Minutes Commissioner Hynes made a motion to approve the minutes of the April 14, 2011 meeting; Commissioner Cristiano seconded the motion. The motion carried. Complaints from the Police Department Commissioner Cristiano reported no known problems or complaints from the Niles Police Department. ***** As this time, because there are new members on this commission, there was open discussion about what kind of complaints are directed to this commission and how these complaints are handled. The following points were discussed: The nature of complaints accepted by this commission is racial or ethnic. The complaints can come from retailers or neighbors, and can be made to either Village Hall or the Police Department. Bill Terpinas checks informally with the Police Department to see if any complaints have been made. This commission has never received any complaints. It was suggested that this commission needs to let people know that it exists and its purpose. We should formalize the procedure for getting information from the Police Department to this commission and perhaps implement a sort of “ethics hotline.” Commissioner Hynes will discuss this with Commissioner Terpinas. ***** Report from the Commissioners There was no report from the commissioners. Next Meeting The next meeting is scheduled for October 13, 2011. There being no official complaints or further business to come before the Community Relations Commission, Commissioner Cristiano made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Commissioner Gorski.
