MEETING SUMMARY
Thursday, January 11, 2018

I. Call to Order
Meeting was called to order at approximately 5:37pm.
II. Approval of Minutes
Minutes of the October 5, 2017 Meeting were unanimously approved.
III.Façade Grants – Review Policy and FY 19 Budget Recommendations
After a discussion of our current program and discussion of what Mundeline offers in façade grant
programs it was suggested that Ross bring back information on other communities programs and then
perhaps the Commission could review potential changes to the Niles program ($5,000 limit and type
of improvements eligible).
IV. Review of Members of EDNR Executive Committee and EDNR Commission
This item was table to a later date.
V. Niles Current Economic and Financial Condition
Ross gave a report on the current Economic and Financial Conditions in Niles. After the presentation
there was a general discussion of economic activity in Niles and the potential for development
opportunities in the future.
VI. Share/Ask Something
Steve Costa asked about the status of a housing program to encourage home
improvements/expansions. The Mayor stated that this is in the works and should be presented to the
Village Board soon.
Iwona Filipiak told us about a developer she has introduced to the Village of Niles who is currently
developing large mixed-use developments in Poland and they are interested in exploring
opportunities in Niles and requested we show a presentation video from this developer at a future
meeting.
Judy McNulty recommended that we make the economic development information we provide in
these meeting available to the public at large.
Mike Shields emphasized the point that we need to “tell the story” about Niles and our schools. He
also suggested that we invite the Chamber to present on what they are doing, how they provide value
and how we can help.
Denise McCreery suggested that the Commission get back to trying to identify key individuals in the
various neighborhoods we have identified in the Village. Furthermore she suggested we try to get
every neighborhood to plan a block party or other events for National Neighborhood Day on
September 28th.
