ART IN THE PARK:
Commissioner Klaver announced that she will be leaving the Park District therefore leaving the
Commission for another opportunity out of state. Her last day in Northbrook will be May 4 th and she will
help the commission get as much organized and done for the event before leaving her position. No one at
this time has been appointed to her position so information regarding her replacement will be available by
the May meeting.
Chairman Miller gave an update that the Artists are still sending in their money. Erin Melloy of EM
Events estimates the event will be full which would be 75 Artists of which we budgeted for 65. We are
working on an Image for the event from an artist from this year and will have an update at the next
meeting. We will be sending the image to the Park District to see if it will work for us this year.
Music is lined up and the contracts will go out tomorrow. We are working on the food vendors and will
update the commission at the next meeting. The commission will be selling water again this year.
Volunteers – Some emails are coming in from volunteers and we will be advertising more for volunteers
as the date gets closer. We are still looking for a volunteer coordinator.
Advertising – The Chicago Tribune will be selling ads with our logo. This will be the same as last year.
At this time we do not have the prices for this year but ask commercial businesses if they would like to
advertise. We do not want to use this paper as our program so we need to develop a program which will
be an additional cost.
We need to have a children’s event so think of ideas and present them at the next meeting. We also will
have the Junior Artists and let’s think about only having them on Saturday. This would include 8 to 17
year olds. The commissioners agree that we will only offer Saturday to the Junior Artists this year.
Commissioners discussed the large tent issue and how maybe Civic or other commissions may want to
purchase a tent and we can participate in the purchase of one for our events. Renting vs. purchasing is
being discussed and more information is needed before any decisions are made.
The YMCA is interested in doing the children’s project for this year. They have a teacher and volunteers
and Commissioners Fallows, Miller and Winnie will present a project.
SPRING WORKSHOPS
Commissioner Siegel reported the first workshop was a success with 18 participants. To date we have
taken in $4,237.50 and the next two workshops are scheduled for April 28 & 29 and May 19 & 20. If we
have two more participants we will break even on the event. You can attend both days or just one day but
all commissioners are encouraged to sign up.
POP UP GALLERY
Commissioner Goldman has been developing and presenting ideas to the commission to take the place of
the Studio Tour. The sub-committee for this event met and asked Joy the event coordinator, if she would
be willing to waive her $3,000 fee and she responded they would like a December Holiday show and a
good facility to hold the show and she would be willing to waive her fee. They would set up, take down
and monitor the art.
She was thinking about a two week show which would include possible workshops within the space and
become a community art showing. Space and the cost of the boards (which would be $1000) will be the
largest obstacles to overcome. They would like to have a space in the Central Business District to keep it
close to the holiday shoppers.
Chairman Miller asked the commissioners if this idea is something worth pursuing and they all stated yes.
Commissioner Goldman will keep fine tuning her ideas and present them again at the next meeting for
further discussion.
The commissioners discussed the goal is to have an event every month of the year.
YMCA – Music Event (Gig on the Green Replacement):
Commissioners Laughlin and Bruce reported the layout at the YMCA is good for musical events. The
event would be the first three Tuesdays after Northbrook Days. We would start advertising within the
next couple of weeks and also at Art in the Park. Commissioners were asked to present name ideas at the
next meeting for this event.
MOTION: Commissioner Bruce motioned to allocate $3,500.00 from the budget for three (3) musical
events in the summer and Commissioner Laughlin seconded the motion. All in favor and motion passed.
A request was submitted to the Arts Commission for a grant in the amount of $270.00 for prizes for the
Junior High Art Show. The YMCA is partnering with the Arts Commission to hold this event in
November at the YMCA. This would include 20 Jr. Artists, first come first served and the Arts
Commission will hand out the prizes at the end of the event. This would include 9 prizes, three for each
age group. A reception would be held in the beginning of November and the art would hang for the
month of November. The Arts Commission would jury the art.
MOTION: Commissioner Laughlin requested $270.00 for prizes for the Junior High Art Show to be
held at the YMCA and sponsored by the Arts Commission. These prizes would be $50.00 for First Place,
$25.00 for Second Place and $15.00 for Third Place. This would give 3 prizes per category.
Commissioner Siegel seconded the motion. All in favor and motion passed.
OLD BUSINESS:
Liaison Maltas spoke with Steve Gianni from the Library about the concerts and he told her they were all
successful and filled to capacity for Concerts on Three and all of the Piano concerts. This continues to be
a successful event.
Northbrook Community Choir event at Regina in Wilmette on March 10th was well attended and really
fun. Chairman Miller attended and really enjoyed herself and reported the facility was almost full and the
music was very enjoyable.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Commissioner Goldman spoke about the Art in the Jar project through May 14th at the John Umquist
Center (Music Center of the North Shore). On April 28th I am painting to raise money for Alzheimer’s
they have 50 artists that paint ½ a day and have a reception that evening.
Glenbrook North/South Musical Shows tickets are on sale for the Phantom of the Opera show this year.
You need to order your tickets as they are sold out for some shows already.
Chairman Miller sent out the grant request via email to all commissioners and she would like to know if
everyone wanted this form of information. This will allow for questions before the meeting so everyone
can be prepared for the meeting. The commissioners like this form of information before the meeting.
ADJOURN
Commissioner Laughlin made a motion to adjourn and Commissioner Bruce seconded. On voice vote,
the motion passed and the meeting adjourned at 8:17 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
