MINUTES OF THE NORTHBROOK ARTS COMMISSION VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK October 3, 2013 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Julia Miller at 7:03 p.m. at the Northbrook Village Hall in the Terrace Room. Commissioners present: Jerry Block, Elsa Fischer, Marilyn Jamora, Christopher Laughlin, Sharon Moyer, Cherie Natenberg, Eric Robbins, Cathie Winnie, Sherry Weiss. Commissioners Excused: Maureen Fallows. Commissioners Absent: None Guests in attendance: MINUTES: Chairman Julia Miller asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the September 12, 2013 meeting. Commissioner Laughlin called for the motion and Commissioner Jamora seconded. All are in favor as noted. HERE FROM THE AUDIENCE: N/A FISCAL YEAR 2014 ACTIVITY - Financial Report Chairman Miller discussed the funds in the budget and how the commission wants to allocate them. Recurring events such as the Library Concerts, Workshops, Northbrook Originals, Rock the Green and Art in the Park we briefly discussed and the costs associated with them. Chairman Miller asked the commissioners to think about light pole banners and other forms or media to promote the Arts Commission and their events. Commissioner Robbins presented a grant request for the Library “Concerts on Three” in the amount of $1,000.00. The commission discussed the request. MOTION: Commissioner Laughlin motioned to approve the request in the amount of $1,000.00 for the Library’s “Concerts on Three” and Commissioner Jamora seconded the motion. All commissioners are in favor, Commissioner Robbins abstained. Steve Gianni will be taking Commissioner Robbins place on the commission as Commissioner Eric Robbins will be retiring. Mr. Gianni may be returning to the commission later this year or early next year to request the other $1,000.00 for another concert if the construction is completed at the Library. Commissioner Jamora reported on the Spring Workshops that Bridget Austin is confirmed for the April 26th and April 27th Water color workshops. Also Tom Nachreiner is confirmed for the March 29th and March 30th Oil Painting workshops. Once dates are confirmed with the Park District (sometime around January 1st, 2014) we will confirm the dates with the Artists. The commission is keeping a third workshop in mind for now. Chairman Miller discussed Northbrook Originals with the commission and proposes that the commission offer prizes this year. There are 143 visual Artists in Northbrook and in prior years we have only had about 50+ Artists participate in the event. Chairman Miller asks the commission, 1) Do you want to do Northbrook Originals? The commission needs a sub-committee and start working on this event as some commissioners are gone for the winter and the show is next April. 2) Sub-committee will need to arrange for the judging of the event, hanging of the Art in the Library and the Reception for the Artists. Commissioner Robbins reported approximately 1000 people a day walk through the Library. Commissioners discussed the need for a master list of Artists for all forms of media for future invitations and the thought of an Artist gathering in Northbrook. Rock the Green is an event the commission would like to do next year with the Park District and Commissioner Laughlin will present a grant to up the budget for this event in the near future. The commission has agreed to budget $5,000.00 for Art in the Park for 2014. The commission discussed coming up with new ideas for projects, events, banners for the light poles, updated website and the need for sub-committees. Commission Laughlin would like to have an event “Day of Diversity” with the Community Relations Commission in late May for one weekend. This event will be discussed further when Commission Laughlin discusses this with the CRC. Committees are needed for the Northbrook Originals and one for Art in the Park. The contract for EM Events is in legal. Erin Malloy of EM Events has a deadline of February 1st, 2014 for Artists to sign up. Committee needs to discuss, Silent Auction, Children’s Project, food vendors and if the commission would like to keep the same music format or not. Chairman Miller will send out dates for sub-committee meetings to start the planning for Art in the Park 2014. Commissioners are updating their contact information. MEETING TIME CHANGE idea Chairman Miller discussed a request to change the time of the commission meetings to earlier. The commissioners discussed the request and feel the starting time of 7:00 p.m. is the best. ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENTS: Chairman Miller discussed the retirement of Eric Robbins and his replacement Steve Gianni. Eric Robbins was one of the founding members with Judy Hughes and helped write the by-laws. Everyone thanks him for all his hard work and wish him and his family the best in the future. Eric Robbins will be missed by all. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Request received from Arden Courts to volunteer at their facilities for their residents to help read to them, puzzles, projects, etc. The Northbrook Tower has an article about the Northbrook Park District wins award and grants. The Illinois Arts Council has awarded a grant for $10,025.00 to the Park District. Celebrate Autumn Fest this coming weekend from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. GFLA award for budgeting was received by the Park District. Home for the Holidays tickets are selling fast. Tickets prices start at $15.00 and go the $39.00 each. There will be two shows this year on December 8, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m at Techny Towers. Information is available on the Northbrook Park District website. ADJOURN Commissioner Fischer made a motion to adjourn and Commissioner Laughlin seconded.
