ART IN THE PARK UPDATE
Julia Miller gave a status update on the planning for the 2014 Art in the Park scheduled for July 12th and
13th, 2014. The commission is still accepting applications from artists at this time. There have been 73
artists juried into the show but we do not expect all of these artists will accept. The status is normal for
this time before the event.
Julia Miller also discussed the April 8, 2014 Art in the Park advertising committee meeting. Attending
that meeting were Joy Stewart, Northbrook Park District, Erin and Megan Melloy of EM Events and
Emma Trauch, Arts Commission Village Liaison. The committee reviewed the draft of the new logo for
the Art in the Park event and expects to have a final version ready for use in promotional activity very
soon.
In addition, the committee discussed various ways of promoting the event concluding that the success of
the local print and radio (NPR) in 2013 should be repeated. Erin Melloy will contact NPR and Julia
Miller will try to reserve spots in the Northbrook Tower and Star for the issue prior to July 12th & 13th.
Commissioner Block brought up the idea of the Arts Commission participating in the July 4th parade.
The idea will be reviewed. In addition, other promotional opportunities, such as Park Fest post cards etc.
were briefly discussed.
WORKSHOPS:
Commissioner Jamora reported the Tom Nachreiner, oil workshop, on March 29 & 30th at the Village
Green Center, was excellent. Eleven people attended and the preliminary profit was $ 196. The
watercolor workshop with Bridget Austin is scheduled for April 26th & 27th, at the Chalet. This workshop
is full, with 20 people registered and eight people on the waiting list. The preliminary profit on this
workshop is $1,490.
NEW BUSINESS:
The Northbrook Public Library requests that the Arts Commission grant funds in the amount of $550 for
the third place award at the annual library art exhibit, this year entitled “Pipsqueak”. Julia Miller discussed
the history of this event and that the Arts Commission had participated in each of the previous 10 years.
The motion was made by Commissioner Fischer to approve the grant of $550 to the Northbrook Public
Library for the third place award in the Pipsqueak Art Exhibit. Sharon Moyer seconded the motion. The
motion was approved by commission with Steve Gianni of the Northbrook Public Library abstaining.
Julia Miller discussed a request from Judith Hughes of the Northbrook Historical Society to transfer
funds granted by the Arts Commission in 2013 to fund part of the music costs at the 2013 Shermerfest.
This event was cancelled because of severe weather. The transferred funds would be used to help offset
the entertainment costs for “Sundae in the Park” July 20, 2014, a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the
Northbrook Historical Society. A motion was made by Elsa Fischer and seconded by Marilyn Jamora to
approve this transfer of funds. Motion was approved.
