MINUTES NORTHBROOK ARTS COMMISSION VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK February 4, 2016 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Julia Miller at 7:06 p.m. in the Village of Northbrook Terrace Room. Commissioners present: Al Alvarez, Jerry Block, Steve Gianni, Frank Lamberti, Christopher Laughlin, Sharon Moyer. Commissioners Excused: Sheila Day, Marilyn Jamora and Cherie Natenberg. Commissioners Absent: None Guests in attendance: Janet Cordovi, Arie Cordovi, Brad Baskin and Marsha Schwartz (for her 3rd meeting). MINUTES: Chairman Julia Miller asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the December 3, 2015 meeting. Commissioner Block motioned to approve the minutes from December meeting and Commissioner Moyer seconded the motion. All are in favor with noted changes, Motion passed. ANNOUNCEMENT FROM CHAIRMAN MILLER Chairman Miller announced her term ends April 30, 2016 and her replacement has been chosen. Commissioner Laughlin will be the new Chairman of the Arts Commission starting May 1, 2016. Over the next few months they will work together so the transition will be as seamless as possible. Chairman Miller announced that Al Alvarez is an appointed Commissioner as of this month of the Arts Commission. Everyone welcomed him to the commission. HERE FROM THE AUDIENCE: Brad Baskin, Photographer, Northbrook resident. Janet Cordovi and her son Arie are in attendance. The commission introduced themselves to the guests. DISCUSSION AND GRANT REVIEW Commissioners Laughlin, Alverez and Gianni are organizing two musical/dance events to be held on Sundays at 2:00 p.m., May 1st and May 15th, 2016. One event will be a Latin/Jazz and the other will be Flamenco. These will be held at the Northbrook Public Library in the newly renovated Auditorium which can hold up to 225 people. The Public Library will be producing the posters and the printing design. This will be publicized in the Newsletters, etc. The sub- committee is budgeting $2,200.00 for Artist fees and $500.00 for sound. Chairman Miller gave a brief report of the finances to the commissioners before voting on the Musical/Dance event. MOTION: Commissioner Moyer proposes the commission fund up to a total of $2,700.00 for the Musical/Dance events at the Northbrook Public Library, Commissioner Block seconded the motion. All are in favor. Motion passed. 2016 ART IN THE PARK update: Chairman Miller announced that our event planner from last year has retired. The commission is under contract with Debbie Netter from D&W Events. The contract will be similar to last year’s excluding the Finances as Debbie Netter will handle the budget excluding the Music and Children’s activity booth. Chairman Miller will be overseeing this event until April 30, 2016 and then Emma Perley will take over as Commissioner Laughlin will be working with Emma Perley. When the contract is signed a meeting schedule will be sent out to discuss the action plan and assign the tasks. The contract is being fine-tuned at this time regarding responsibilities of the commissioners and the event planner. The Park District will again be doing the Artwork for the posters etc. Once the contract and responsibilities are finalized, the information will be given to the commission. Commissioner Block’s photos and video of the event last year will be used for promotion for this years’ event. SPRING ART WORKSHOPS update: Chairman Miller announced the workshops that are held at the Village Green Tile Room will be held March 19th and 20th, a pastel workshop with Mary Kaye Peter Whitlock. So far the commission has 5 people signed up and normally we end up with 8 or 9 people total. The second workshop will be held on April 30th and May 1st, is a watercolor workshop with Bridget Austin. The commission has 18 people signed up for this workshop to date. There are only 2 openings left for this workshop. NORTHBROOK ORIGINALS ART EXHIBIT The Annual Art Show of only Northbrook Artists will be held at the Northbrook Public Library during the months of April and May 2016. The deadline for submission has been extended until February 27, 2016. The commission currently has 15 people signed up already. This is a very nice exhibit and people have given great reviews. The list holds 88 Northbrook Artists that have been invited. The commission will discuss the reception at a later date. APRIL POETRY EVENT The poetry event will be April 17th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm which will be held in the Auditorium at the Northbrook Public Library. Currently there are 12 adults with 75 poems submitted between them. The event has been organized by Deborah Rohde, a local poet. The budget approved for the prizes for the event at $500.00. The Poetry Association will be doing the judging. The deadline is March 1, 2016. They are looking for children with poems now to participate in the event. OLD BUSINESS: None NEW BUSINESS: None ANNOUNCEMENTS: Commissioner Gianni reminded the commissioner that the Concerts on Three start this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Mira Luxion, Violinist from the Glenbrook Symphony Orchestra.
