MINUTES NORTHBROOK ARTS COMMISSION VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK April 7, 2016 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Julia Miller at 6:00 p.m. at the Northbrook Public Library. Commissioners present: Al Alvarez, Jerry Block, Sheila Day, Steve Gianni, Marilyn Jamora, Frank Lamberti, Christopher Laughlin, Sharon Moyer and Marsha Schwartz. Commissioners Excused: Cherie Natenberg. Commissioners Absent: None Guests in attendance: Bruce Bondy, Janet Cordovi and Jolie Friedman. MINUTES: Minutes are deferred from the March 3, 2016 meeting until the May meeting. ANNOUNCEMENT: Commissioner Jamora recognized Chairman Miller’s last meeting and announced she will not be returning to the commission so this will be her last meeting as well. She thanked the commission for all their support and work on the arts for Northbrook. Chairman Miller thanked the Commissioners for all their hard work and wishes them well as she moves on to other chapters of her life. HERE FROM THE AUDIENCE: APRIL POETRY EVENT This event will be held on April 17th from 1:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. in the Auditorium at the Northbrook Public Library. There are 50 + entries and 12 winners. Debbie Rohdy is the Poetry Event Coordinator, Commissioner Gianni and Chairman Miller have discussed the event and the space layout. NORTHBROOK ORIGINALS ART EXHIBIT Chairman Miller announced they have 53 Artists and this is the first time artwork will be hung on the first floor of the Northbrook Public Library since the remodeling has been completed. 2016 ART IN THE PARK update: Chairman Miller announced our event planner Debbie Netter is sending out Artist invitation letters to 53 Artists. There are 10 Artists who have accepted with clarification. Our limit is 75 Artists. The second planning meeting is scheduled for April 14th at 9:00 a.m. at the Village Green. The Park will be walked and layout discussed at this meeting. All are invited and all are encouraged to attend the meeting. The Artist Hospitality, Music, Young Artist and Informational Booth are the responsibility of the commission. Chairman Miller estimates the cost for this to be about $6,000.00. At the May meeting the budget should be ready to be discussed and voted on. MAY MUSICAL EVENT Commissioner Laughlin, Alvarez and Gianni updated the commission on the status of the contracts with the performers and advertising. The contract with the Northbrook Public Library for the event will be finalized by the middle of April. The event planning is on schedule. There are only 225 seats so come early because it’s first come first served. The Village of Northbrook is subject to the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. ROCK THE GREEN Commissioners Laughlin updated the commission regarding the advertising is out and promoting it well. The event is progressing forward. SPRING ART WORKSHOPS update: Chairman Miller updated the commission on the first workshop and it was modestly successful. There were 6 people who attended this workshop which gave the commission a deficit of $135.00 on this workshop. The second and final workshop will be on April 30th and May 1st. This workshop has 27 people signed up and 8 people on the waiting list and the profit would be $1,160.00. Between the two workshops is a total profit of $970.00. The workshops are a good source of revenue for the commission and bring wonderful artists to the area. The Commission thanks the Northbrook Park District for all there help so the commission can bring these Artists from out of town to our community. This helps the commission afford the Artists from other states to teach these workshops in our community. OLD BUSINESS: Commissioner Gianni announced the 2 Piano 4 Hands that the Arts Commission sponsored went very well. NEW BUSINESS: Commissioner Schwartz announced the Northbrook Symphony is holding a Gala Benefit, “Music is Magic” at the Renaissance Hotel on June 3rd, 2016. The price per ticket is $125.00 or purchase a table of 10 for $1,000.00. This will be an evening of good food and wonderful music which also includes a Silent Auction. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Northbrook Originals has 55 Artists. “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” movie will be shown on June 3 rd after Rock the Green at the Village Green.
