MINUTES NORTHBROOK ARTS COMMISSION VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK May 5, 2016 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Christopher Laughlin at 7:00 p.m. at the Northbrook Village Hall Terrace Room. Commissioners present: Jerry Block, Frank Lamberti, Christopher Laughlin, Sharon Moyer and Marsha Schwartz. Commissioners Excused: Al Alvarez, Sheila Day, Steve Gianni and Cherie Natenberg. Commissioners Absent: None Guests in attendance: Jolie Friedman (second meeting) MINUTES: Minutes are deferred from the March 3, 2016, April 7, 2016 and May 5, 2016 meeting, until the June meeting. HERE FROM THE AUDIENCE: None APRIL POETRY EVENT Chairman Laughlin and commissioner Moyer reported that the event went well. Approximately 60 people attended at the Northbrook Public Library and they feel this event would be good to do again in the future. THE LATIN EXPERIENCE CONCERTS Chairman Laughlin reported that the first music/dance concert went well at the Northbrook Public Library. Adrian Luiz is a pianist that performed Latin Jazz along with three percussionists, a trumpet horn and a bass player. A ballroom dancing couple did some Salsa and Maringa. The next concert will be held on May 15, 2016 which is Flamenco dance and music group. This concert will have Commissioner Al Alvarez as the dancer. Recommend this series to your friends. This is a new medium of Art for the commission. The Commission thanks the Northbrook Public Library for all their help with the series and the space for the event. ROCK THE GREEN Chairman Laughlin reported Monday was the deadline for applications. The semi-finals are scheduled for mid May. The event is June 3, 2016. There is $1000.00 in prize money that has been approved. 2016 ART IN THE PARK update: Liaison Perley reported the walk through at the Village Green went well but they came up with a different location for the young artists this year. The young Artists will be placed along the path on the way to the food court so there will be more visibility for them this year. Event planner Debbie Netter is recruiting the food vendors at this time. 60+ Artists are registered to date for the event. Chairman Laughlin reported the Musicians are in place and the Sound system is still being researched. The Village of Northbrook is subject to the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Artist Hospitality Room: Must start at 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. , Needs volunteers Young Artists Booth: Needs volunteers Floaters to relieve Artists: Needs volunteers Music: Chairman Laughlin will oversee REVIEW OF INCOME/EXPENDITURES Chairman Laughlin looked at a 12 month period of events and expenditures. The commission discussed the expenditures and the events they have been granting too. The Commission will review the list and discuss other events they are working on sponsoring in the future. GENERAL DISCUSSION OF SHORT AND LONG-TERM PRIORITIES Chairman Laughlin discussed a list of events the commission funds. Some are sponsored events at other venues and others are events the commission created and oversees. They also discussed what types of Art the commission is sponsoring or overseeing. The Performing Arts are the more expensive events for the commission. Chairman Laughlin would like to prioritize the events. Chairman Laughlin is asking any commissioners if they would like to take the lead for fall workshops. Please let him know at the next meeting. OLD BUSINESS: None NEW BUSINESS: None ANNOUNCEMENTS: On May 15th will be the Alma Flamenco concert at the Northbrook Public Library. May 15th someone with the Northbrook Choir will be performing at the University of St. Mary of the Lake – Cardinal Mundelein Auditorium, Sunday at 3:00 p.m. “Americana” Theater Organ Concert. Proceeds benefit the Mundelein Seminary Music Program and the continued upkeep and restoration of a gift from George Cardinal Mundelein in 1925 – Mundelein’s first Fire Truck – Old Number One.
