NORTHBROOK ARTS COMMISSION
VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK
September 1, 2016
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Christopher Laughlin at 7:01 p.m. at the Northbrook Village Hall Terrace
Room.
Commissioners present: Al Alvarez, Sheila Day, Steve Gianni, Eileen Loftus, Sharon Moyer and Marsha Schwartz.
Commissioners Excused: None
Commissioners Absent: Jerry Block
Guests in attendance: Bruce Bondy, Janet Cordovi and Chardrika Marla.
MINUTES:
Minutes from August 4, 2016 meeting are tabled until October 6, 2016 meeting.
HERE FROM THE AUDIENCE: Chandrika Marla –local artist is looking to revisit the idea of the studio
tours. Proposes one Saturday where artists open their homes/studios to the public, and people can conduct
their own tour. Art works would be made available for sale by the Artist. This would be little to no cost for
the Arts Commission, however the short lead-time is concerning. A tentative November 5th date, from 12-
4pm was proposed. Posters need to be created and distributed.
MOTION: Commissioner Day moved to approve the Northbrook Artist Studio Tour with an allocated dollar
amount not to exceed $300.00 and seconded by Chairman Laughlin. All are in favor. Motion Passed.
2016 ART IN THE PARK update:
Proposals were received from Erin Melloy and Lisa Zschunke. Chris spoke with Erin Melloy of EM Events
and she is requesting the same amount of $14,000 as in previous years. She would manage the artist
recruitment and the Arts Commission would be responsible for all other expenses, similar to previous years.
Lisa would be similarly structured, as more of an event coordinator but with lots of input from the
commissioners. Chris also spoke with Amy Amdur, and her arrangement would be revenue neutral. She
would recruit artists, collect fees, have sponsors, and provide staff, security, music, etc. This option would
have very limited opportunities to capture revenue.
The commission discussed what type of show they would want to have. Most of the commissioners agreed
they do not like the idea of vendors in the Art in the Park event, however it seems as though sponsors are
where the revenues come from. Commissioners were asked for suggestions on writing a tighter contract to
have more control of the event.
Commissioner Loftus suggested reviewing the contracts ahead of time, coming up with questions, and
getting those questions answered at the next meeting. Chairman Laughlin will coordinate a meeting time to
hear sales pitches from bidders.
Local Artist Studio Tours revisited – See above. This agenda item moved up to “hear from the audience”.
