NORTHBROOK ARTS COMMISSION
VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK
May 4, 2017
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Christopher Laughlin at 7:15 p.m. at the Northbrook Village Hall
Commissioners Present: Jerry Block, Susan Wolf, Sharon Moyer, Eileen Loftus, Marsha Schwartz, Al
Alvarez
Commissioners Absent: Bruce Bondy
Guests in Attendance: Rob Sills, Chandrika Marla
Minutes:
Commissioner Loftus motioned to approve the minutes from the April 6, 2017 meeting. Commissioner
Moyer seconded. Upon a voice vote, all were in favor.
Hear from the Audience:
Chandrika led conversation regarding the Northbrook artist studio tours, and if the commission is interested,
she suggested an October timeframe. This would tie into Chicago artists’ month. Chandrika stated she would
present more information at the next commission meeting.
Discussion of Finances:
Chairman Laughlin discussed the Arts Commission’s budget. He notified the commissioners that the Spring
Workshops brought in $2,172.50. Overall the budget is yielding around $14,000.00.
Proposal of Plein Air Festival:
Chairman Laughlin discussed the possibility of hosting the event the third weekend in September (22nd-
24th), taking into consideration any conflicts this might have with Jewish holidays. It was suggested a list of
interesting areas around Northbrook should be provided to participating artists. Commissioner Laughlin also
suggested hosting a speed painting portion on Sunday.
The expected expenses include prizes, advertising, judges, display materials, and food. Examples of
commissioner participation would include checking artists in, answer questions, and coordinating the display
of completed paintings.
Commissioner Wolf offered her assistance in creating a packet of information on Northbrook, which could
be handed out to the artists as they check in. Commissioner Loftus recommended a draft budget be created
prior to approving a dollar amount for the event.
Discussion of Community Table at Northbrook Farmer’s Market:
Chairman Laughlin was contacted by Dale Duda who runs the Northbrook Farmer’s Market. He offered the
Arts Commission the opportunity to staff a table at the Farmer’s Market. The commission would have a table
reserved for August 2nd. Commissioner Moyer moved to staff a table on August 2nd. Commissioner Block
Seconded. Upon a voice vote, all were in favor.
Updates on any Ongoing Projects:
Northbrook Originals
Commissioner Moyer stated the Northbrook Original’s show has been up and running for two months.
Commissioner Block discussed the artists in residence program. Specific mediums will be selected to be
displayed for two months at a time.
Spring Artist Workshops
Commissioner Moyer stated she would like to see this event expand to possibly three workshops next year
due to popularity.
Rock the Green
Chairman Laughlin stated the event would be held June 2nd, but he doesn’t currently have a firm number on
applications or bands that have applied.

Announcements:
Commissioner Wolf informed the board that the Library is hosting a summer reading kickoff event Saturday
June 3rd. There are going to be 5 tables in the lobby for Northbrook organizations to promote their activities,
running from 11am-3pm. Commissioners Laughlin and Moyer stated their availability for staffing a table at
the Library.
Commissioner Schwartz also discussed handing out information about the Arts Commission during
Flamingo Friday (May 19th). The commissioners discussed the creation of a handout document that lists the
commission’s completed events and the upcoming events.
Adjourn:
Commissioner Block moved to adjourn the meeting, and Commissioner Loftus seconded. Upon a voice vote,
all were in favor. The meeting adjourned at 8:17p.m.
