1 Minutes of a Meeting of the 2 Northbrook Community Relations Commission 3 Asian American Heritage Subcommittee 4 Monday, March 23, 2015 5 6 7 Present: Chair Ray Wehr, Subcommittee Members James Hyun, Jasmine 8 Lee, Frank Lenardi, Bob Lozaro, Dan Moy, Howard Schultz, and 9 Misty Vinson-Spitzer 10 11 Guests: None. 12 13 Absent: Reemlee Chowdhury 14 15 Others: Staff Liaison Mike Strong 16 17 Call to Order & Welcome 18 Chair Ray Wehr called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. in the conference room of the 19 North Suburban YMCA at 2705 Techny Road in Northbrook. 20 21 Hear from the Audience 22 None. 23 24 Update on Entertainment for 2015 Event 25 Member Jasmine Lee gave an oral report concerning the entertainment acts who have 26 confirmed participation in the 2015 event. Included this year will be music and dance 27 groups featuring Bollywood fusion, Korean SoriBeat, Japanese Tsukasa Taiko, and 28 Chinese stunt Yo-Yo artist Ryan Shi. 29 30 Member Lee stated she is still waiting to receive confirmation from a Filipino dance 31 group, and hopes to hear later this week. 32 33 Member Hyun stated he is also in contact with a children’s dance group who has 34 expressed interest in the event, but due to AP test schedules they may not be able to 35 commit. 36 37 General discussion took place concerning the confirmed artists, and if there would need 38 to be additional acts to fill the event timeframe. The subcommittee all agreed to reach 39 out to a Taekwondo group to participate. 40 41 Additional discussion took place concerning the order of the acts and how to the 42 entertainment portion should be scheduled. Member Jasmine Lee stated she would reach 43 out to the acts to see if they had preference on the order. 44 45  Minutes of a Meeting of the Asian American Heritage Subcommittee March 23, 2015 46 Update on Food Vendors for Event 47 Member Lozaro gave an overview of the confirmed resturants for the 2015 event. He 48 stated that the Pavilion and Golden Chef have confirmed participation, and that he was 49 still waiting to hear back from an Indian restaurant. 50 51 Member Hyun stated the Dundee Market and Filipino Catering groups are on board, but 52 food would need to be ordered and picked up the day of the event. He stated he is in the 53 process of ordering 2-3 meals from each of these caterers. 54 55 Update on Artisan Vendors and Children’s Activities for Event 56 Member Lenardi stated that there will be two arts and crafts activities for children in the 57 ABC Room. He added that there may also be an origami activity, but is awaiting details 58 from a teacher. 59 60 Member Schultz stated he is confirming a Sumi-E artist to have artwork on display, and 61 will be working with the Midwest chapter to participate in the event. Member Hyun 62 stated that he would be conducting Korean calligraphy during the event. 63 64 Update on Promotion and Marketing 65 Staff Liaison Strong gave an update on the status of the flyer and press release. General 66 discussion took place concerning the press release. 67 68 Member Vinson-Spitzer asked if the Village would be creating a web page or facebook 69 page for the event. Staff Liaison Strong stated that he would organize a meeting with the 70 Village’s Communication Manager to discuss strategies for promoting the event. 71 72 Member Vinson-Spitzer stated that the YMCA has the banners, but will need to purchase 73 stickers to place on the banners informing the date and time. 74 75 Member Schultz stated that the subcommittee could also look into creating a short video 76 to play on YouTube to promote the event, which could also be shared on the facebook 77 page once it’s created.
