Commission Chair Bruce Doughty

Others: Village Staff Liaison Erik Jensen, Library Director Kate Hall

Welcome

Co-Chair Singer called the meeting to order at 7:03pm in the Second Floor Business Conference Room at
Northbrook Public Library.

Hearing from the Audience

There was no audience.

Planning for the 2017 Celebration of Cultures

Chair Doughty reviewed the Celebration of Cultures event and the last meeting to discuss a film festival
in August for Ms. Hall. He overviewed the umbrella concept and some of the initial conversations that
had been held on it.

Co-Chair Singer reviewed the details from the last meeting, including using the Wednesday movie
showings to hold the film festival.

Ms. Hall reaffirmed that was the Library’s plan.

A conversation occurred on the event logistics for individual movie showings. Co-Chair Singer asked if
speakers could talk or hold discussions after each showing.

Ms. Hall confirmed they could. Ms. Hall stated that the Library staff has a significant amount of
experience with leading discussions and that, depending on the films selected, the discussion could go
beyond the film and focus on the culture as well. She then overviewed different possibilities.

Chair Doughty stated that a broad conversation after each film would be very appropriate.

A conversation followed on whether the films selected should be representative of the cultures present
at the Faire or could they be separate. Ultimately, the group decided that the films did not necessarily
need to overlap.

Co-Chair Singer stated that the Subcommittee’s current vision was that the event could be different
each year and a film festival would be a great connection point.

Ms. Hall stated the Library’s goal was to create a safe, inclusive space and this collaboration was an
excellent fit.

A conversation followed on marketing. Ultimately, the group created a schedule for publicity centered
on the Library’s publication schedule deadlines.

Ms. Hall stated she would have the Library staff responsible for getting the films and marketing the
festival get in contact with Mr. Jensen and begin planning for the festival.

After some further discussion, the group agreed to meet again for a marketing meeting with the YMCA
in January.

Co-Chair Han also stated the Library could participate directly at the Faire if they would like. A brief
conversation occurred on how this could be achieved.

Chair Doughty summarized that the marketing managers from the Village, Library and YMCA would
meet and the Subcommittee would stay in contact with the Library.

Adjournment

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Co-Chair Singer, seconded by Co-Chair Han. On a voice
vote, all aye.

The meeting closed at 8:02.

Respectfully submitted,
