1 Minutes of a Meeting of the 2 Northbrook Cares Subcommittee of the 3 Community Relations Commission 4 Northbrook, IL 5 Wednesday, January 11, 2017 – 7:00pm 6 7 Present: Chair Bruce Doughty, Members Elliot Bruckman, Sharon Latek and Alice Lonoff 8 9 Others: Village Staff Liaison Erik Jensen; Teen Representatives Dori Latek, Joanie 10 Sandstrom, Taylor Cohn and Megan Kamin; Member of the Public Dan Quinn 11 12 Welcome 13 14 Chair Doughty called the meeting to order at 7:00pm in the Terrace Room at Village Hall. 15 16 Hearing from the Audience 17 18 Chair Doughty recognized Dan Quinn, Deputy Fire Chief, who joined the meeting as a member of the 19 public. 20 21 Review and Approval of Minutes 22 23 Chair Doughty noted that there were a number of minutes for approval this evening. He stated that they 24 would also need to be finalized by the full Community Relations Commission but that any changes 25 should be considered this evening. He then asked if their approval could be done in an omnibus manner. 26 27 Liaison Jensen confirmed the minutes could be approved that way. 28 29 Chair Doughty asked if anyone had any corrections. 30 31 There were none. 32 33 A motion was made by Member Bruckman, seconded by Member Latek, to approve the Northbrook 34 Cares Subcommittee Minutes of February 23, 2016; April 6, 2016; April 27, 2016; June 29, 2016 and 35 August 4, 2016 as presented. On a voice vote, all aye. 36 37 Updates on Activities 38 39 Chair Doughty updated the group on the status of the Text-A-Tip Implementation. He explained the 40 program to the teen representatives and discussed the partnership between the local schools districts 41 and Villages of Glenview and Northbrook. 42 43 Chair Doughty then stated that a meeting for the “exchange group” of social service agencies would be 44 held in the near future. 45 46 Website Design Review 47 48 Chair Doughty briefly overviewed the mission and purpose of the Northbrook Cares website for the 49 group and thanked everyone for attending the design session. He stated that the purpose of tonight’s 50 meeting was to gather feedback to be given to the Village’s consultant to be considered as part of the 51 design process and that Liaison Jensen would be managing the discussion. 52 53 Liaison Jensen overviewed the timeline for the Northbrook Cares website and then discussed the type of 54 feedback the consultant was seeking for design. He then displayed five different websites which were a 55 combination from the consultant’s portfolio and the group’s own selections and led the group in 56 discussing what they liked or did not like about each. 57 58 Ultimately, the group developed the following guidelines for the consultant: 59  Simplify the text on the site – use larger and less text to guide website visitors 60  Place crisis buttons near the top of the site for those who may want immediate referral 61  Make the search feature prominent 62  Focus on ease of use and minimize the use of distracting graphics and displays 63  Use a warm and inviting set of colors – potentially light yellow, green, blue or purple or a dark 64 blue 65 66 The group also developed a list of sites for submittal to the vendor to use as examples. 67 68 From the audience, Mr. Quinn discussed how different colors could be used to direct attention. He also 69 stated it was important to make sure that outside link referrals are direct and it’s made clear what a 70 person should do on the next site. 71 72 Adjournment 73 74 A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Member Bruckman, seconded by Member Latek.
