1 Minutes of a Meeting of the 2 Celebration of Cultures Subcommittee of the 3 Community Relations Commission 4 Northbrook, IL 5 Monday, February 13, 2017, 7:00 p.m. 6 7 Present: Co-Chair Dr. Rochelle Singer, Co-Chair Jason Han, Members Ron Mantegna, 8 Chris Beeftink, Helena Osorio, Joy Ebhomielen and Marianna Kosaya 9 10 Others: Village Staff Liaison Erik Jensen, NSYMCA Director Howard Schultz, NSYMCA 11 Facilities Worker Dan Savino 12 13 Welcome 14 15 Co-Chair Singer called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. in the Front Reception Conference Room at the 16 North Suburban YMCA. 17 18 Hearing from the Audience 19 20 There was no audience. 21 22 Planning for the 2017 Celebration of Cultures Event 23 24 Co-Chair Singer reviewed the current status of the event and discussed the broad logistics for the event. 25 She also passed out instructions for how to seek payment for an invoice and apply for temporary food 26 service permits with the group. 27 28 Co-Chair Singer then asked Member Osorio to discuss the Latino Station. 29 30 Member Osorio described her plan. 31 32 Marianna Kosaya joined the meeting at 7:19 p.m. 33 34 Co-Chair Han introduced Ms. Kosaya as the coordinator for the Russian station. 35 36 The group introduced themselves to Ms. Kosaya. 37 38 A brief conversation was held on the Russian station and the Russian entertainment for the event. 39 40 Co-Chair Singer stated there would again be twelve stations this year and reviewed each briefly for the 41 entire group’s benefit. 42 43 Co-Chair Singer also discussed the film festival at the Library for the group’s information. 44 45 Mr. Schultz asked about the dates for the film festival. 46 47 Co-Chair Singer clarified. 48 49 Co-Chair Han and Member Beeftink explained the children’s activities at the event . 50 51 Joy Ebhomielen joined the meeting at 7:31 p.m. 52 53 Co-Chair Singer introduced Ms. Kosaya and asked Ms. Ebhomielen about the African/African-American 54 station. 55 56 Member Ebhomielen described the station. 57 58 Co-Chair Singer reviewed the art space available this year. Ms. Kosaya stated she may be able to provide 59 art. Co-Chair Singer stated she would follow up. 60 61 Co-Chair Singer briefly reviewed the marketing for the event and asked each station coordinator to 62 promote it as well. Co-Chair Singer then asked Member Beeftink to discuss the Scavenger Hunt. 63 64 Member Beeftink described the scavenger hunt. 65 66 Co-Chair Singer then reminded the group that artifacts were needed for the Library display case. 67 68 Member Osorio asked how large the case was. 69 70 Co-Chair Han clarified and explained the deadline was March 1 for submissions. 71 72 Member Mantegna discussed doing an “Immigrant Stories” project as a promotion as well as an item for 73 the event. 74 75 The group briefly discussed and agreed to come to a final decision later. 76 77 Mr. Schultz suggested that the group tour the facility at the YMCA and discuss logistics. 78 79 The group recessed at 7:45 and reassembled in the YMCA’s gym facility at 7:48. 80 81 Mr. Schultz briefly toured the room for the group. 82 83 Co-Chair Singer gave Mr. Schultz the initial floorplan. The group briefly discussed it and decided that the 84 existing plan would work but could be altered leading up to the event. 85 86 Adjournment 87 88 A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Member Osorio, seconded by Member Mantegna.
