APPROVED MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE NORTHBROOK YOUTH COMMISSION VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK Wednesday, April 18, 2012 “LEAD, SERVE, SHINE” Co-Chairman Casey Luc and Chairman Carla Slawson-Martens called the meeting to order at 7:07p.m. in the Shermer Study at the Village Hall. In attendance were: Village Liaison Kendal E. Maltas. Adult members: Gary Moriello, Michael Shore, Sharon Weingarten and Lauren Schifferdecker. Additionally, in attendance were Student Youth Commission Members Joshua Handler, Adam Wagner, Amanda Mawrence, Grace Elisco. Prospective student applicants in attendance were Kent Steinberg, Ross Steinberg, Peter Szemraj and Danny Martens. Also in attendance was Karie Luc, recorder. Not in attendance: Kay Stein, Sandie Huberty, Ryan Wagner, Maggie Linforth, Andy Han, Josh Tolmatsky, Charlie Serota, Maddie Serota, Julia Ring and Amanda Mawrence. WELCOME Co-Chairman Luc asked for personal introductions. All offered gracious introductions. MINUTES Chairman Slawson-Martens asked for a review of the meeting minutes for Jan. 25, 2012. Member Handler moved to approve the minutes with noted changes, seconded by Member Moriello. On voice vote, the motion carried. HEAR FROM AUDIENCE No report. REVIEW OF FEBRUARY QUIZ BOWL/SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENTS Co-Chairman Luc asked for input. Member Handler felt it was the best Quiz Bowl he participated in. He felt there were no technical issues and that everything went smoothly. Member Elisco felt additional communication outreach would be beneficial to the schools. There was discussion that the Quiz Bowl recording could be offered on the Internet as an on-demand program. Applications to the Youth Commissions could be included in the Quiz Bowl packets given to the schools. Member Weingarten made a motion to stream live the cablecast of the 16 th Annual Quiz Bowl. This was seconded by Member Matlin. On voice vote, motion carried. FILM FESTIVAL PROGRESS UPDATE Deadline for Submissions Liaison Maltas has been in communication with Glenbrook North High School about film submissions. Glenbrook South High School is also being approached for submissions. Member Handler felt that opening the submissions to the North Shore community might be beneficial. Liaison Maltas is working on press materials. Co-Chairman Luc felt the Central Suburban League might be helpful as a geographical group to approach. Press outreach was discussed, with members offering input. Member Handler said he would be happy to display posters at GBN, with those posters being approved by GBN before posting. Should awards he given? This was discussed. Member Matlin felt there should be a panel to offer fair voting. Member Moriello wondered if the library and the Youth Commission could provide panelists since both entities are working on the festival. This was discussed. The suggestion of offering cash prizes was put on the table. Member Handler will look into PA access at GBN. Member Moriello made a motion to provide $200 for prizes. This was seconded by Member Handler. Motion carried. Member Elisco asked for a short explanation of the scope of the festival which Chairman Slawson-Martens offered. Liaison Dean said she would continue to reach out to appropriate entities, recapping the upcoming goals before the Monday, June 11 film festival, to be held at the Northbrook Public Library auditorium. The time is 7 p.m. Liaison Dean will access the Internet link provided by GBN to review potential film submissions. Co-Chairman Luc said he works with students at GBN who enjoy graphic design and he offered to reach out to them for poster artwork ideas. Chairman Slawson-Martens asked for a show of hands to see who would in attendance at the film festival. Most raised hands. YOUTH FORUM PROGRESS UPDATE Liaison Maltas would like to move this to the next meeting. STUDENT HOT TOPICS The Phantom of the Opera is coming up at the end of the month. Please attend. Liaison Maltas asked the members if they would be interested in redesigning the Youth Commission logo. All felt this would be a good idea. Co-Chairman Luc is taking a class in graphic design at GBN and knows others who would be interested in entertaining this. Member Handler suggested branding via t-shirts. NEXT MEETING – MAY 16, 2012, WHO WILL CO-CHAIR? Co-Chairman Luc asked who would like to chair the next meeting. Member Ross Steinberg will serve as chair. ADJOURN With no further business, Member Matlin moved to close the meeting, seconded by Member Ross Steinberg. On voice vote, the motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 8:21pm.
