APPROVED MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE NORTHBROOK YOUTH COMMISSION VILLAGE OF NORTHBROOK Wednesday, May 23, 2012 “LEAD, SERVE, SHINE” Co-Chairman Ross Steinberg with Chairman Carla Slawson-Martens called the meeting to order at 7:14p.m. in the Terrace Room at the Village Hall. In attendance were: Adult members: Sharon Weingarten, Kay Stein, Sandie Huberty. Additionally, in attendance were Student Youth Commission Members Ben Stein, Joshua Handler, Adam Wagner, Ryan Wagner, Julia Ring, Amanda Mawrence, Peter Szemraj, Andy Han, Ethan Matlin, Danny Martens. Also in attendance, Karie Luc, recorder. Not in attendance: Village Liaison Kendal E. Maltas, Gary Moriello, Michael Shore, Lauren Schifferdecker, Grace Elisco, Josh Siu, Harrison Marick, Casey Luc, Maggie Linforth, Josh Tolmatsky, Kent Steinberg, Charlie Serota and Maddie Serota. WELCOME Co-Chairman Steinberg asked for personal introductions. All graciously were welcomed. MINUTES Co-Chairman Steinberg asked for a review of the meeting minutes for April 18, 2012 . Member E. Matlin moved to approve the minutes, seconded by Member B. Stein. On voice vote, the motion carried. HEAR FROM AUDIENCE No Report. FILM FESTIVAL PROGRESS UPDATE Submission progress Chairman Slawson-Martens said there is one submission received to the Northbrook Public Library Multimedia Dept. to date, four others pending. A GBN link has been provided and many here have accessed that link to view the film submissions. Assignment of Duties Co-Chairman Steinberg asked for volunteers. Several persons were designated. This a $300 fund for awards, how shall this be allocated? This was discussed. Co-Chairman Steinberg called for a motion. Member R. Wagner moved for a $200 grand prize with other participants receiving a portion fairly divided from the remaining $100 (of which the remainder will be allocated in gift card format). This was seconded by Member Marick. This was passed unanimously. How the winner would be determined was discussed, with options including portions of audiences offering their top choice, enhanced by the opinion of designated judges. The goal was fair judging. Three designated judges were discussed. Member Handler made a motion for a weighted voting system with two adult judges working in confluence with the audience. This was seconded by Member Szemraj. This was passed unanimously. YOUTH FORUM PROGRESS UPDATE Chairman Slawson-Martens waived the update pending Liaison Maltas. MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE NORTHBROOK YOUTH COMMISSION May 23, 2012 Page 2 of 2 STUDENT HOT TOPICS Phantom of the Opera musical was a sell-out. Prom was last weekend in Rosemont, and the weather was ideal. Chairman Slawson-Martens also talked about an opportunity by invited adult members of the Youth Commission to participate on a literacy panel. Chairman Slawson-Martens posed some questions about issues affecting teens, such as healthy eating at the cafeteria. RECOGNITION OF SENIORS Chairman Slawson-Martens honored seniors by passing out ceremonial engraved pens. Member Ring, Handler and Stein were acknowledged and thanked. ADJOURN With no further business, Member Handler moved to close the meeting, seconded by Member Luc. On voice vote, the motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 8:18 pm.
