Call to Order 37 Chairperson Slawson-Martens enlisted a Chairperson from student commissioners. Commissioner Han 38 volunteered and called the meeting to order in the Terrace Room of Village Hall, 1225 Cedar Lane, at 39 7:12 p.m. A quorum was present. 40 41 2. Approval of Meeting Minutes 42 Commissioner Moriello moved, seconded by Commissioner Matlin, to approve minutes of the March 19, 43 2014, Youth Commission meeting without corrections. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried. 44 45 3. Hear from the Audience 46 There was no audience. 47 4. 2014 Calendar of Events 48 A. Film Fest Page 2 Minutes of the April 16, 2013 Youth Commission Meeting 1 Chairperson Slawson-Martens read Commissioner Whitlock’s update: 2  there are 5 entries 3  the local press has been contacted 4  Matt Irvine will be contacted for advice on how to evaluate the submissions 5 6 Chairperson Slawson-Martens has contacted filmmakers who previously submitted films. Film 7 reviews could take place at the May meeting or a link could be provided via email to 8 commissioners for review. 9 10 Commissioner Moriello asked why it’s always difficult to obtain submissions. Chairperson 11 Slawson-Martens advised that it takes a long time to attain recognition in the community. 12 13 Commissioner Christenson referred to an article regarding a 48-hour Film Project where a 14 North Shore team, including a resident/student from Northbrook named Aaron Lauby, won 15 the film fest. Chairperson Slawson-Martens suggested this individual be contacted to submit 16 his film or share his experience. 17 18 Commissioner Kaplan spoke with Tray, and he may participate. 19 20 After tonight’s meeting, Chairperson Slawson-Martens will submit the email (that she’s been 21 circulating) to the commission so that they may utilize this correspondence. 22 23 Chairperson Slawson-Martens asked who will be in town to participate in the festival on 24 June 9th. Everyone (but possibly Commissioner Kaplan) indicated they would be available. 25 26 Staff Liaison Batalden advised that representatives from Hyatt Deerfield have been in touch to 27 inquire if guest rooms/meeting space is needed. 28 29 Commissioner Christenson asked if the deadline would be extended. Chairperson Slawson- 30 Martens asked the commission if it would be feasible to extend the deadline by a few weeks. 31 Ideally films would be in hand by the next meeting on May 21st. Commissioner Han asked if 32 the deadline is extended, would the filmmaker(s) have time to edit. Chairperson Slawson- 33 Martens replied that she is under the impression that submitted films are already edited. It 34 was suggested that filmmakers who have already provided submissions be advised that the 35 date has been extended in case they wish to have more time. Commissioner Matlin suggests 36 the deadline only be extended once. 37 38 Commissioner Moriello moved to extend the deadline to May 16th. Commissioner Christenson 39 seconded the motion. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried. 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 5. Membership Campaign 47 Chairperson Slawson-Martens reminded of last meeting’s discussion for recruits: Page 3 Minutes of the April 16, 2013 Youth Commission Meeting 1  8th grade Quiz Bowl members 2  8th grade participants from Student Government Day on May 7th 3  an article will be noted in the next Village newsletter 4 5 Chairperson Slawson-Martens asked for other suggestions for member recruits: 6  Commissioner Han stated he would obtain approval then make a pitch to the Student Advisory 7 Board 8  It was noted that applications would be given out on Student Government Day 9 10 6. Senior Send-Off 11 Chairperson Slawson-Martens advised that on May 21st, all seniors receive a gift and pizza is provided. 12 13 Commissioner Moriello moved to spend up to $1,000 for pizza & $20 each for senior gifts. Commissioner 14 Martens seconded the motion. Pens were suggested as a possible senior gift. Commissioner Moriello 15 amended his motion that a total of $200 be spent for May 21, 2014’s pizza party & senior gifts. 16 Commissioner Martens accepted the amendment. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried. 17 18 7. New Business 19 There is no new business. 20 21 8. Old Business 22 Prom Night was briefly discussed. Staff Liaison Batalden advised that the Village will not fundraise for 23 another organization’s event. Commissioner Moriello shared an issue when a past, outside event was 24 funded. Staff Liaison Batalden stated that in-kind donations to Village events are acceptable, but 25 monetary solicitations by the Village or its committees are not acceptable. 26 27 9. Student Hot Topics 28  Rotary Club of Northbrook has sponsored students, of which Commissioner Han is one, who will 29 attend its upcoming event in Wisconsin; 150 total attendees are expected 30  Selected and near-selected colleges were shared by student commissioners 31  GBN’s Men’s Volleyball team is undefeated 32 33 10. Adjournment 34 Chairperson Slawson-Martens elected Commissioner Kaplan to be Student Chairperson for the May 21st 35 meeting. 36 37 Commissioner Moriello moved, seconded by Commissioner Matlin, to adjourn the meeting at 7:47 p.m. 38 On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried. 39 40 Respectfully submitted, 41 42 43 Gale Cerabona 44 Recorder
