Call to Order 45 Chairperson Slawson-Martens enlisted a Chairperson from student commissioners. Commissioner Elisco 46 volunteered and called the meeting to order in the Terrace Room of Village Hall, 1225 Cedar Lane, at 47 7:09 p.m. A quorum was present. 48 Page 2 Minutes of the May 21, 2013 Youth Commission Meeting 1 2 3 2. Approval of Meeting Minutes 4 Commissioner Moriello moved, seconded by Commissioner Matlin, to approve minutes of the April 16, 5 2014, Youth Commission meeting without corrections. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried. 6 7 3. Hear from the Audience 8 Chairperson Slawson-Martens introduced: 9  Joshua Handler who is a GBN alumni, a NY University Film School student, & Northbrook Youth 10 Commission alumni. Mr. Handler shared that he was recruited by Commissioner Stein to the 11 Northbrook Youth Commission & previously submitted a film at all former Northbrook Film 12 Festivals. 13  Leslie Kolber who advised she has been a former Co-Chair of Grad Night for 7 years. In addition 14 to her full-time job, she believes this Commission would be a match for her skill set. Chairperson 15 Slawson-Martens welcomed Ms. Kolber and stated that the Village Board will have the final say 16 in approving her as a new member of the Northbrook Youth Commission. 17 18 Commissioner Kaplan arrived at 7:14 p.m. 19 20 4. 2014 Calendar of Events 21 A. Film Fest 22 Chairperson Slawson-Martens shared that 11 films have been submitted (and 4 films were not 23 selected). The agenda was referenced: 24  Welcome 25  Introduction of film festival by a Student Commissioner 26  Block 1 – the first group of films will be shown 27  Nathan Flanagan Frankel’s (GBN alumni who won an Oscar & prize at a previous 28 Northbrook film festival) film will be presented (edited from 20 minutes to 8) & is 29 not an official entry. He will attend via Skype; Commissioner Whitlock to facilitate. 30  Block 2 – remaining group of films will be shown 31  Matt Irvine (Professor from DePaul) will conduct a Panel discussion with filmmakers 32 followed by Q&A. Mr. Irvine will preselect 3 winners as well as winners for 33 technique awards (i.e. cinematography, film editing, etc.) 34  Prizes/Certificates 35  Questions from audience (via microphone; need technical assistance) 36  Food items were referenced 37 38 Commissioner Wagner arrived at 7:26 p.m. 39 40 Chairperson Slawson-Martens asked if there are any thoughts or concerns about the festival: 41  Commissioner Wagner asked/stated 42 o what if the internet goes out that night? It was suggested that two flash 43 drives accommodate the films. 44 o this event may require more crew than usual. 45 o his brother submitted a film (via the web site), & stated it would be edited by 46 the film festival date Page 3 Minutes of the May 21, 2013 Youth Commission Meeting 1  Commissioner Moriello stated that monitors would be helpful 2  Commissioner Stein asked – where is the best place to park? Commissioners Wagner 3 & Kaplan replied – the front entrance. 4  Chairperson Slawson-Martens suggested 5 o Commissioners arrive early 6 o nametags for staff identification; past festival t-shirts could also be worn 7 o signage – commissioners to hang signs & direct guests 8 o flyers -- & passed out same, asking Commissioners to distribute them in 9 Northbrook establishments. 10  Mr. Handler asked 11 o if the Village President is attending. Chairperson Slawson-Martens advised 12 President Frum will be invited as well as the Community Relations 13 Commission, Deerfield school staff, & all appropriate school staff. 14 o if he could view the submitted films. Chairperson Slawson-Martens suggested 15 links of the films be illustrated in the program. Another recommendation is to 16 note these links on the Youth Commission page of the Village web site 17  Commissioner Stein commended Commissioner Whitlock in doing a great job in 18 promoting this event. Commissioner Moriello agreed that this is the first time an 19 Adult Commissioner has taken a lead 20 21 Chairperson Slawson-Martens asked who will attend this June 9th event. A majority of 22 Commissioners raised their hands. In recapping, the following is required: 23  Ushers 24  Sign Hangers 25  Commissioners to arrive at 6:30 p.m. 26  Student to join Chairperson Slawson-Martens on stage. Commissioner Han 27 volunteered. 28  Present cash prizes & awards – Commissioners Elisco & Wagner volunteered 29  Program Design – Commissioner Elisco volunteered 30  Food – Licorice – Commissioner Hakimian was recruited 31 32 A discussion took place on where the 200-seat theatre is located. It was stated the challenge is 33 building attendance for this event. Chairperson Slawson-Martens suggested an email 34 describing the film festival be submitted to Commissioners so they may share with their 35 contacts. Promotion on Facebook, Twitter was also recommended as well as sharing the 36 Village’s web site. Chairperson Slawson-Martens stated she will forward a descriptive email to 37 Commissioners so it may be shared. Mr. Handler suggested the GBN web site tweet 38 information about the film festival. Chairperson Slawson-Martens will attempt to seek out the 39 individual who distributes GBN updates. 40 41 Commissioner Matlin inquired about decorations. These items were suggested: 42  Red carpet 43  Movie posters 44  Taping off the rear section of theatre so guests move to the front 45  Balloons – Commissioner Elisco to research 46 Page 4 Minutes of the May 21, 2013 Youth Commission Meeting 1 2 5. Membership Campaign 3 A. Student Government Day Outreach Results 4 Commissioner Matlin shared that 30+ students attended, & he spoke about the Youth 5 Commission. Staff Liaison Batalden advised that 4 applications have subsequently been 6 received. Applause was given to Commissioner Matlin for his efforts in promoting membership. 7 8 B. Introduction of Guests/Potential Members 9 See agenda item 3. 10 11 6. Senior Celebration 12 Chairperson Slawson-Martens recognized Commissioners Schifferdecker & Shore as they will be leaving 13 the Youth Commission. Engraved gift pens were presented to the following Youth Commissioners & 14 applause was given: 15  Allison Kaplan 16  Ethan Matlin 17 18 Chairperson Slawson-Martens noted that an email will be sent to those seniors not present tonight so 19 that they may receive their gifts. 20 21 7. New Business 22 There is no new business. 23 24 8. Old Business 25 Commissioner Elisco distributed a flyer, program, & ticket from the Fashion Show & shared that this 26 fundraiser raised $1,500.00. 27 28 9. Student Hot Topics 29  Commissioner Han advised that junior final exams are coming up & are difficult 30  Commissioners Kaplan & Matlin stated the Prom was fun. Some students went to Starved Rock 31 while others went camping. 32 33 10.
