37 1. Call to Order
38 Chairperson Slawson-Martens opened the meeting & Commissioner Mankoff, Student Chairperson,
39 called the meeting to order in the Terrace Room of Village Hall, 1225 Cedar Lane, at 7:02 p.m. A quorum
40 was present.

42 2. Welcome & Introduction of New Members
43 Everyone introduced themselves, & Joshua Handler, former Youth Committee member, was welcomed.

Youth Commission Meeting
1 Commissioner Whitlock moved, seconded by Commissioner Martens, to approve the minutes of the
2 November 19, 2014, Youth Commission meeting. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried.

4 4. Hear from the Audience
5 Joshua Handler thanked everyone for having him here tonight. He noted he is studying at NYU and
6 graduating in May.

8 5. 2014/15 Upcoming Calendar of Events
9 a. Quiz Bowl
10 Liaison Batalden advised he sent notices to high schools and received responses from four
11 schools that will participate. Commissioners Martens and Kirschenbaum will visit Solomon
12 Schechter and attempt to regain its participation.

14 Open positions were discussed. Student Chairperson Martens reminded members that the
15 event is being held on Thursday, February 26 2015, from 5pm-6:30pm. Rehearsal date will
16 be February 18, 2015, at the regular Youth Commission meeting at 7pm.

18 b. Lake Cook Terrace Spring Visit
19 Chairperson Slawson-Martens reminded this event is typically held this evening. Spring
20 dates in March/April were discussed. A tentative date of March 18, 2015, was determined.
21 The type of event was discussed. Chairperson Slawson-Martens stated she would advise
22 Student Chairperson, Bianca Osinski, of the date. Liaison Batalden stated he would place a
23 call to the staff at Lake Cook Terrace to share and reserve the proposed date.

25 c. Film Fest
26 Chairperson Slawson-Martens reminded that the Student Chairperson for this event is Lucia
27 Bosacoma. Potential dates in June were discussed. Suggested venues, of the GBN Theatre or
28 the Library, were offered. Mr. Handler suggested the first or third week in May to ignite
29 more participation.

31 Film submission dates were discussed. Commissioner Whitlock reminded, for promotional
32 purposes, that he presents to film classes to enlist participation. Having an article written is
33 also recommended. Teachers are notified when their students submit a film.

35 Commissioners Whitlock and Bosacoma will meet and subsequently provide ideas to the
36 Youth Commission in January.

38 Commissioner Whitlock believes and will again ask that Matt Irvine participate in the event.

40 Chairperson Slawson-Martens advised that Dylan Baker, director of 23 Blast, will participate.

42 Commissioner Whitlock suggested a panel of three to provide feedback of the films. He also
43 mentioned that Bruce Ingram, Film Critic, may be interested.

45 Commissioner Kirschembaum stated he would ask his sister, who works in Los Angeles at a
46 production company, if she’d like to assist.

1 a. Operation Santa Claus Debrief
2 Chairperson Slawson-Martens advised the event took place, went well, and thanked
3 everyone for their participation.

5 b. Study Buddy Program Update
6 Chairperson Slawson-Martens reminded the Commission of last month’s discussion
7 regarding volunteer opportunities for Youth Commission members.
8
9 Commissioner Han advised that the Northbrook Library was approached in the past;
10 however, to no avail. He stated that Glenview Library has such a program. He reported that
11 he tutors GBN students at the Homework Club at Northbrook Junior High and stated there
12 are openings to tutor.

14 Commissioner Kirschenbaum advised the club, After School All Stars, at GBN, performs
15 tutoring as well.

17 7. New Business
18 Liaison Batalden advised he attended the first Earth Day meeting and shared the Youth Commission’s
19 interest to participate. He noted Earth Day is on April 25, 2015, and there are opportunities for clean-up
20 teams (for the recycling program at Village Green), etc. Liaison Batalden will advise of more volunteer
21 opportunities at the next meeting.

23 8. Student Hot Topics
24 Commissioner Wagner advised students are being accepted at top colleges (i.e. Stanford, MIT,
25 Princeton)
26 The Retire the Jerseys event is upcoming
27 AP U.S. History research projects are due

29 11. Next Meeting
30 Discussion took place on the date of January’s Youth Commission meeting. Student Chairperson will be
31 Lucia Bosacoma.

33 Commissioner Martens moved, seconded by Commissioner Kirschenbaum, to change the meeting from
34 January 21 to January 28, 2015. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried.

36 12. Adjournment
37 Commissioner Kirschenbaum moved, seconded by Commissioner Martens, to adjourn the meeting at
38 7:47 p.m. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried.
