Call to Order 37 Chairperson Slawson-Martens opened the meeting and enlisted Commissioner Bosacoma to be Student 38 Chairperson. Commissioner Bosacoma called the meeting to order in the Terrace Room of Village Hall, 39 1225 Cedar Lane, at 7:07 p.m. A quorum was present. 40 41 2. Welcome 42 43 3. Approval of Meeting Minutes 44 Commissioner Moriello moved, seconded by Commissioner Christenson, to approve the minutes of the 45 February 18, 2015, Youth Commission meeting. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried. 46 47 4. Hear from the Audience 48 There was no audience. Lake Terrace Spring Visit 4 Student Chairperson for this event is Commissioner Osinski. 5 6 Various dates were discussed, and since Lake Terrace staff prefers Mondays or Tuesdays, 7 proposed dates of April 13 or 20 from 6 p.m.-7 p.m. (or earlier based on facility) were 8 suggested. 9 10 Liaison Batalden shared that Lake Terrace staff is open to activities as discussed. The 11 event/game was narrowed to Bingo with refreshments and prizes to be picture frames, 12 small trophies, etc. 13 14 Commissioner Whitlock recommended that Student Chairperson Osinski contact the 15 remaining Youth Commission members with tasks for them to sign up and then follow up 16 with a confirmation email. Student Chairperson Osinski concurred and will generate a 17 spread sheet. Student Chairperson Osinski offered to purchase prizes, and Commissioner 18 Mankoff offered to purchase refreshments. 19 20 Commissioner Moriello moved, seconded by Commissioner Whitlock, to secure a budget of 21 $50 for prizes. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried. 22 23 Student Chairperson Osinski stated that, in her email, she will ask what food items members 24 will bring. 25 26 Commissioner Moriello moved, seconded by Commissioner Osinski, to approve a budget of 27 $30 for refreshments. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried. 28 29 Chairperson Slawson-Martens suggested that Student Chairperson Osinski kickoff the event 30 by introducing herself and Youth Commission members and announce that they are here to 31 host bingo. 32 33 Entertainment suggestions were…….Commissioner Han to play the violin, the committee to 34 bring a boombox or provide a cell phone with music in the background. Student Chairperson 35 Osinski stated she will request Commissioner Han’s participation. Liaison Batalden reminded 36 Student Chairperson Osinski to be sure that return emails are to her only -- not “reply all”. 37 38 b. 2015 Film Fest 39 Commissioner Bosacoma advised the Little Theatre is available on May 28, 2015 at 3 p.m. 40 Commissioner Whitlock reminded that the form to reserve the room must be completed, 41 and he will provide same to Liaison Batalden. 42 43 Commissioner Whitlock advised that preliminary steps have been taken, as he has contacted 44 all area schools, last year’s winners (to submit films again), and sent the form to Cheryl for 45 films to be submitted via the Village web site; he will follow up with Cheryl. Commissioner 46 Whitlock stated he also spoke with Gary Donatelli (a GBN alumni and filmmaker) who is Page 3 Minutes of the March 18, 2015 Youth Commission Meeting 1 ready, willing, and able to help (judge, be interviewed, etc.). He noted that Matt Irvine is 2 also interested to assist again. 3 4 Commissioner Whitlock advised, as Wheeling High School has its own Film Fest, Youth 5 Commission members may be able to attend that fest and promote the Youth Commission’s 6 Film Fest. Chairperson Slawson-Martens and Commissioner Whitlock stated that film 7 winners from Wheeling should submit their films (as last year’s timing didn’t allow for that). 8 9 Chairperson Slawson-Martens asked Commissioners if May 28, 2015, is enough time before 10 the event, as the challenge is always receiving enough films. 11 12 Chairperson Slawson-Martens suggested an article wrapping up (the last 5 years) as well as 13 this year’s Film Fest be submitted as a press release. Liaison Batalden advised that Cheryl 14 can place flyers in virtual backpacks (in junior high schools). Snap chat photos were also 15 recommended. 16 17 A brief discussion took place on student-inspired vs. mandated filmmaking. 18 19 Commissioner Mankoff shared that his broadcast school teacher showed 3 films in class that 20 were then critiqued by the students. Commissioner Whitlock and Chairperson Slawson- 21 Martens noted they have previously been in touch with that teacher, Mr. Rubin. 22 Commissioner Mankoff stated he will follow up with Mr. Rubin to perhaps suggest these and 23 other student films be submitted for Film Fest. 24 25 Commissioner Whitlock recommended an article be place in the Glenbrook Torch. Youth 26 Commission members will follow up with Joe Ferber. 27 28 Commissioner Whitlock advised that 2-3 college students submitted films last year, noting 29 the age range has typically been 21 years and under. He suggested, if college filmmakers are 30 invited, a separate college category/award be given. 31 32 It was reminded that submissions have previously been student-directed films. It was 33 recommended that highlights of celebratory films be shown. Liaison Batalden suggested a 34 Youth Commission montage/slide show. Chairperson Slawson-Martens recommended a 30- 35 second highlight/opener/welcome. Commissioner Christenson suggested tying in 2016’s 30- 36 year anniversary of the film Ferris Buehler’s Day Off which was filmed at GBN. Chairperson 37 Slawson-Martens recommended that Commissioners brainstorm to coordinate this. 38 39 Chairperson Slawson-Martens proposed a Film Fest banner at the corner of Walters and 40 Shermer Roads. Liaison Batalden estimated a fee of $150. Chairperson Slawson-Martens 41 suggested the banner be hung by May 11, 2015. 42 43 Commissioner Moriello moved, seconded by Commissioner Christenson, to allocate $200 44 toward a banner for the Film Fest. On a voice vote, the motion unanimously carried. 45 46 47 6. Old Business Page 4 Minutes of the March 18, 2015 Youth Commission Meeting 1 Quiz Bowl was briefly discussed. Commissioner Whitlock stated that no math problems should be in the 2 lightening round (as it slows things down). Chairperson Slawson-Martens suggested that judges 3 participate in future rehearsals. Commissioner Whitlock suggested giving the teams their t-shirts upon 4 arrival. Chairperson Slawson-Martens identified that the “bye round” went smoother and faster. 5 Commissioner Moriello recommended inviting Countryside Montessori School (this would eliminate the 6 bye round). 7 8 7. New Business 9 Liaison Batalden stated he has a request from the Community Relations Commission/CRC regarding 10 Inter-Faith Sunday on April 19, 2015. Flyers were shared and Youth Commission members are asked to 11 distribute same to their respective Houses of Worship. 12 13 Liaison Batalden reminded that Earth Day is April 25; the event is 8 a.m.-1 p.m. He noted that volunteer 14 opportunities are still available; he will follow up with an email. 15 16 8. Next Meeting 17 The next meeting will be April 15, 2015; Commissioner Mankoff volunteered as the Student Chairperson. 18 19 9.
