City of Norwalk Norwalk Bike/Walk Taskforce Meeting Minutes July 10, 2017, 6:00pm Health Department, 2nd Floor Library 137 East Avenue, Norwalk CT 06851 Attendees: Nancy Rosett, Mike Heslin, Peter Franz, Jim Carter, Jud Aley, Colin Grotheer 1. The minutes from the May 5th and June 5th meetings were approved. 2. The minutes from the June meeting with DPW and BWTF were reviewed. It was suggested to ask DPW to put bike symbols on Seaview Av which is part of the NRVT route as well as sharrows on Hanford. We would also like to see a second crosswalk across Water St at Haviland using the existing structures for ADA compliance rather than building new ramp(s). Jud will speak to Rocky at the Parking Authority about checking periodically to make sure the “Yield to Pedestrians” sign at the Maritime Garage is in the crosswalk rather than on the sidewalk. 3. Nancy presented Kaitlin’s walking update report: a. Kaitlin is gearing up to present at the National Walking Summit in St. Paul, Minnesota in September. She’ll be working on a poster presentation in the next month or so and would like feedback from you all once a draft is complete. b. Spanish NorWALKer maps are slowly making their way into the community. If you know of any locations in Norwalk that would like English, Spanish, or dual language NorWALKer maps, please let Kaitlin know. c. NorWALKing to the Music will take place every Wednesday at 6:15pm from July 12 – August 30. Please see/distribute the attached flyer. d. Community walks for this month are as follows: i. July 1 in Silvermine: Meet at Silvermine Elementary School at 8:00am ii. July 16 at Calf Pasture Beach: Meet at the pier at 8:30am iii. July 29 in West Norwalk: Meet at Fox Run Elementary School at 8:30am 4. We agreed to have one of the summer interns finish the almost completed accident study using the Police Department’s data. Going forward we’ll consider using http://today.uconn.edu/2017/06/crash-database-developed-uconn-gets-national- attention/ 5. Peter Franz presented some ideas from last month’s Annual Bike Walk Summit and Technical Training. 6. We tabled a discussion of the bicycle survey until next month. 7. We are working with the Health Department, Rec and Parks, the Parking Authority and Planning and Zoning to investigate bringing a bike share program to Norwalk. We’re starting with a survey which has been distributed by the Health and Rec and Parks Departments via social media, to Health Department partners and to the Chamber of Commerce. The link to the survey will be distributed to the major apartment buildings in Norwalk as well as the Norwalk Hour and Nancy on Norwalk. 8. The Ordinance Committee of the Common Council will have a public hearing on the ordinance to create a Bike/Walk Commission on Tuesday, July 18th at 7:00. Several task force members agreed to attend and speak. The meeting adjourned at 7:28 pm.
