Call to Order / Roll Call
The meeting was called to order by Dr. Doshie Piper, Chair, at 6:03p.m. The roll call was taken
by La Tonia Burton, Secretary, and a quorum was present.
1. Approval of Meeting Minutes:
Motion: Charles Johnson moved to approve the meeting minutes from January 6, 2025. Valerie
Reiffert seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously by those present.
Charles Johnson moved to approve the meeting minutes from July 17, 2025, with the
proposed changes. Valerie Reiffert seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously
by those present.
Charles Johnson moved to approve the meeting minutes from July 18, 2025. Valerie
Reiffert seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously by those present.
2. Items for Briefing and Possible Action:

Angela Jolivette moved to execute a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Trinity
University regarding the Trinity Lecture Series as an event related to but independent of the San
Antonio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission’s series of events. The commission would pay
$5,000 towards the Trinity Lecture series. Charles Johnson seconded the motion.
After discussion, Rev. Debra Seward proposed an amended motion to execute the MOU without a
set dollar amount or stating a monetary amount. The phrase “If funds are available” should be
included in the MOU. Charles Johnson seconded the motion. The motion was approved
unanimously by those present.
3. Consent Items:
A. After the citywide poll; with a total of 150 responses, the 2026 Martin Luther King, Jr.
March theme is: “Diversity Unites Us: Love Leads Us & Action Propels Us!” This theme won
with a total of 66 votes.
B. We will have quotes and bids for a stage with comparison photos in September.
C. Agenda item 12: Briefing & Update on Role Descriptions for Commission members
and City of San Antonio support, is moved to next meeting.
4. Commissioner Updates in order of the Roll Call:
Discussion and Motion: All Commissioners present were given the option to discuss the updates
and progress of their committee. Detailed reports were emailed, or hard copies given to the
secretary to place in the secretary’s binder for record keeping.
A. Budgets are due September 15th
B. Vendor booth prices reduced by $100
C. Communication has begun with potential speakers and entertainment
D. New sponsorship levels and categories – the deadline for sponsors is November 10th
E. Orientation for Vendors, Volunteers, Marshalls, and Performers will be January 3rd
with a make-up date of January 11th for those who cannot make the January 3rd date.
F. Vendor and Volunteer portals are open
G. Public Awards luncheon is May 14th.
5. Public Comment:
Dwayne Robinson, former San Antonio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Commission Chair,
expressed his gratitude to the commission for its work and congratulated the new Chair and Vice
Chair. He stated that he is available if any help or advice is needed.
