OTHERS PRESENT: Kathleen Henkelman, Nursing & Senior Services Supervisor Marina Lvovich, Senior Services Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Kathy Ray mo�oned to approve the minutes for the Commitee on Aging mee�ng for April 2, 2024. Seconded by Alex Bonarirgo. Mo�on carried. NEW BUSINESS: 1 1. Member’s Shared Informa�on: Alex Bonarirgo men�oned that the Park District brochure which includes senior programming for summer months, has been sent out with 19 day trips . He reported that the Park District will be embarking on a trip to Spain in October. For more informa�on and to register for upcoming events at the Park District call 847-490-7026 or visit htps://www.parkfun.com/programs- events/seniors. Other ways to receive informa�on on the Park District’s events are to sign-up for their newsleter. Co-chair Bernadete suggested pu�ng informa�on on how to sign-up for the Park District newsleter in the brochure in case new members are unaware. Co-chair Kim Ketel reported on events that are taking place at Schaumburg Township. These include a Senior Music Night on June 17 from 6-8 p.m. with a cost of $15 per person. The Township is remodeling the senior services office in the building as they were damaged by a recent flood. Jessica Ketel, Program Special at the Township of Schaumburg will be frequently atending the COA mee�ngs as a guest to report on programs happening at the township as well as answer any ques�ons COA members have on services offered at the township. Co-chair Bernadete Sigl suggested ge�ng a representa�ve from the Schaumburg Township Library to inform the commitee on events and programs offered by the library. 2. New Ideas for 2025-2026: Deferred. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: 1. Review and Discuss Distribu�on of New Senior Resource Directory: Chairperson Sigl thanked all the COA members for their efforts in upda�ng the newly printed Senior Resource Directory (SRD), no�ng that the new edi�on looks great. The SRD will be reprinted every two years. Marina Lvovich said she received posi�ve feedback from seniors who have received copies of the directory. Copies will be distributed at various local organiza�ons where seniors can easily pick one up, including the Barn, the Park District, Schaumburg Township Library, Schaumburg Township, local churches, the Village of Schaumburg Nursing Division, and other senior service agencies and groups that help connect older adults with valuable resources. Diane Shore suggested placing the SRD at the temporary Village Hall par�cularly at the water billing department as many older adults s�ll pay their water bills in person. 2. New Medical Advances and Preventa�ve Measures Presenta�on: Co-Chair Kim Ketel shared that her contact at Ascension Hospital is no longer available. In response, Kathy Henkelman noted she has a new lead and will share the informa�on with Co-Chair Ketel to support con�nued program planning. Co-Chair Ketel proposed the idea of co-hos�ng Schaumburg Township’s upcoming health presenta�ons with Nurse Janet. The COA would help promote the events and contribute by providing raffles. The scheduled presenta�ons, which are relevant and beneficial to older adults, include: 2 • Wednesday, November 5: Inflammation and the Anti-Inflammatory Diet • Wednesday, December 3: How to Survive the Holidays Both will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. 3. Analysis of Spring Fling and Selected Meal Choice: The event took place on May 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Schaumburg Township. The cost of the lunch is $8 per person, with the Commitee on Aging subsidizing $5 per meal. Co-chairs Bernadete Sigl and Kim Ketel stated that the event was very well atended with over 100 seniors atendees who enjoyed a catered lunch from Chandler’s followed by prize Bingo. Kathy Ray added that the COA should follow the pre-determined schedule and start the event at the assigned �me of 11:30 a.m. instead of allowing early commers in as that interrupts set-up �me and will set a bad example for future events. Ms. Ray also suggested that Bingo cards be handed out at another loca�on other than at the front door as it causes a back up as they are checking in. Kathy Mar�nez replied that the cards can be set up for distribu�on at another table or handed out by COA members to resolved this issue. Co-chair Kim Ketel suggested for future events to have a start �me of the event and when the doors will be opened to allow atendees to come in. 4. Discuss Western Themed Luncheon: Name, Flyer, Food Choice, and Ac�vi�es- Co-Chair Kim Ketel proposed naming the upcoming event “Western Round-Up.” It will be held on Tuesday, August 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Community Recrea�on Center (CRC), 505 N. Springinsguth Rd. Weather permi�ng, the event will take place outdoors, with an indoor backup plan if needed. The event will be coordinated by a sub-commitee co-chaired by Kim Ketel and composed of Kathy Ray, Kathy KoslaMar�nez, and Alex Bonarigo. Alex noted that the Schaumburg Park District will provide industrial mobile grills, tents, tables, chairs, and staff support. Ac�vi�es will include western-themed country music, trivia, and a “Best Western Dressed” contest to create a fun and engaging atmosphere. Co-Chair Kim Ketel has confirmed entertainer Denise Armour to perform at the event. Cost: $10 per person. Menu op�ons: Hamburger, cheeseburger, veggie burger, or hot dog, served with sides of baked beans, chips, watermelon, and drinks. Marina Lvovich will coordinate with the Village of Schaumburg’s Communica�ons Department to create a flyer. Registra�on will be handled by the Schaumburg Park District, either through their online system or by calling 847-490-7026. CONTINUING ITEMS: 1. Liaison’s Report: Kathy Henkelman shared that the Village of Schaumburg Support Our Seniors commitee will host a presenta�on on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Schaumburg Township District Library (Rasmussen Room, 2nd Floor), 130 S. Roselle Rd. The event will feature guest speakers Dr. Melissa Drake and Dr. Kristen Maguire, who will examine the risks, costs, and limited effec�veness of online health solu�ons emphasizing the importance of speaking with your doctor. Detec�ve Michael S. Recupito will discuss the emo�onal and financial dangers of online scams, par�cularly those that target individuals experiencing loneliness. Social Worker Meredith Everhart will speak about the emo�onal impact of scam vic�miza�on and how social workers can provide support. The program, 3 “Love Smart, Live Well, and Stay Safe”, will also explore how aging affects in�macy and rela�onships from medical and legal perspec�ves. Marina Lvovich men�oned several summer events hosted by the Schaumburg Barn Senior Program including. • Summer Picnics will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays, July 17, August 21, September 18 in the pavilion area at Volkening Lake, 900 W. Schaumburg Rd. Fes�vi�es include various outdoor games, Bingo, and lunch from Subway, including a turkey or ham sub sandwich, chips and dessert. The cost to atend each picnic is $7. To atend, please register at least one week prior to event date. Space is limited and payment is due at registra�on. • The annual Flag Day Event for area seniors is scheduled for Thursday, June 12 from 10 a.m.- 7T 37 35T 35T 2:00 p.m. located at Chandler's Restaurant (401 N. Roselle Rd. Schaumburg, IL 60194). The event will feature live entertainment, flag hois�ng ceremony by the American Legion post 35T 35T T 37T #1983, guest speakers from our local government officials, a catered lunch from Chandler's, and Bingo. The event is sold out with 250 atendees including senior atendees and local community representa�ves.www.schaumburg.com/thebarn, contact Marina Lvovich at mlvovich@schaumburg.com or call 847-524-7496. • The Barn is successfully concluding its new senior ou�ng series, “Explore Schaumburg Eateries with Entertainment, last ou�ng being on June 24. This fun, low-cost program offers older adults the chance to enjoy Schaumburg-themed trivia, bingo with restaurant gi� cer�ficate prizes, and group dining experiences. Ou�ngs included Cielo Restaurant in March Rosa�’s in April, Yu’s Mandarin in May, and Granite City coming up in June, with a total of 196 atendees. The series provided great food, lively entertainment, and meaningful social interac�on while strengthening �es with local businesses. • The Administra�on for Community Living (ACL), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has historically funded the Older Americans Act (OAA). However, there is now discussion about the ACL poten�ally being absorbed by the Department of Central Management Services (CMS). The Older Americans Act is currently awai�ng reauthoriza�on, and un�l that happens, federal funding for programs supported by the OAA including those administered by Community Nutri�on Network and AgeOp�ons that help fund The Barn’s meal program remains uncertain. 2. Budget Report: (Atachment 1) The April budget report for FY 2024–2025 was distributed and reviewed. Alex Bonarigo made a mo�on to transfer $150 from the Postage budget to the Food and Mee�ng Supplies budget for FY 2025–2026 to beter allocate funds where they are most needed. The mo�on was seconded by Kathy Ray. A vote was taken, resul�ng in 9 in favor and 0 opposed. The mo�on passed unanimously. 4 DEFERRALS: New Ideas for 2025. COMMENTS FROM THE AUDIENCE: None.
