SKOKIE PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17, 2021
PRESENT: Chairperson Paul Pitalis, Vice Chair Mark Penning, Trustee Edie Sue Sutker, Fire Chief Jeff Hoeflich, Director of
Marketing and Communications Ann Tennes, Deputy Fire Chief Kathy Furgala, Director of Engineering Erik Cook,
Police Chief Brian Baker, Transportation Engineer Samantha Maximilian Alicia Case, David Freireich, Paul
Kruszynski, Mitchell Kushner, Linda Perlin, Dennis Rizo, Joel Reyes, Howard Rosenburg, Cornell Collins, Leslie
Post-Weissinger, Melissa Villegas.
EXCUSED: Trustee Ilonka Ulrich, Director of Public Works Max Slankard Julian Levy, Kenneth Mantel.
ABSENT: Marcie Claus, Daniel Fink, Jr., Edward McCarthy, Bryant Smith, Frank Ippolito, Earl Nicholas.
CALL TO ORDER AND APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
After the awards ceremony, Chairperson Paul Pitalis called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. The minutes of the February 17th meeting
were approved. Members of the Human Relations Commission were also attending the meeting.
POLICE USE OF FORCE DISCUSSION AND NEXT STEPS
A discussion was led by with questions by the Public Safety Commission and members of the Skokie Police. Skokie Police was
represented by Chief Brian Baker, Mike Hartnett, Robert Olkowski, Damon Nikolopoulos, and Mark Ciancheti.
There was discussion regarding the presentations from the previous meetings featuring questions and answers from the representatives
of the police. Topics included: body cameras, social workers with the police, funding, and training. A substantial amount of time was
spent on the 8 Can’t Wait campaign and its relationship with current police policies.

Announcement of the retirement of the Director of Engineering, Erik Cook.

At 9:10 p.m. a motion was made to adjourn which was seconded and then passed unanimously

AGENDA
Until further notice, meetings of the Skokie Pubic Safety Commission will be held
electronically, with a majority of Village officials participating via remote access in order to
comply with the State of Illinois Gubernatorial Disaster Proclamation. Members of the
public who wish to comment as to an item on the published agenda or to comment during
public comments must submit their statement or question in writing to the Village
Manager’s Office and all properly submitted statements or questions will be presented and
read during the relevant portion of the meeting. Written comments may be submitted by
email to citizencomments@skokie.org by mail to Village of Skokie, Village Manager's
Office, 5127 Oakton Street, Skokie, Illinois, 60077; or via the Village’s drop box located by
the public entry to Village Hall.
