Village Seal Committee September 18, 2023 Meeting Minutes In attendance: Maria Monastero Bueno, Trustee Khem Khoeun, Jasmine Gurneau, Emily England, Dick Witry, Joe Hibdon, Patrick Deignan, Amanda Sabri Absent: Karen Lise Sherman, Michaela Marchi, Sheila Crumrine, Thom DaMario, Alex Franz Review of minutes: Minutes approved. Review Village seal survey responses: Patrick reported that nearly 90 community members completed the Village Seal Committee community survey. Responses were overwhelmingly positive, with residents sharing attributes they felt best represented Skokie. Themes included Skokie’s diversity, public services, nature areas, and history, including the Native communities who first inhabited the area, early farmers, and Skokie becoming a destination for Holocaust survivors. Review RFQ responses and determine next steps: Committee members spent time reviewing the six RFQ submissions received by the Village, which included several independent artists and designers, as well as several full-service design and marketing firms. Jasmine suggested the committee extend the RFQ deadline to allow for additional time to reach out to Native artists, including at upcoming Indigenous Peoples Day and Native American Heritage Month events. Maria shared that she was prepared to share the RFQ with contacts at Chicago-area universities with notable art programs in hopes of reaching talented student artists. After a brief discussion, the group decided to extend the RFQ deadline to November 17 to provide enough time to conduct additional community and artist outreach. Patrick agreed to provide the group with an updated introduction email, flyer, and spreadsheet to facilitate and track the committee’s collective outreach efforts.
