Subcommittee of the Environmental Improvement Commission
March 18, 2015, 7:00 pm
In attendance: Nancy Allured, Dennis Beemer, Bruce Berenschot, Michelle Dunlap, Jim Knasel, Carrie Provost,
and Karen Saad; Guest - Paula Barrington, Downtown Wheaton Association (DWA)
Approval of Minutes: Dennis moved that the minutes be approved. Michelle seconded.
Bike Wheaton Festival – Aug 8, 2015: Paula Barrington of the DWA joined the meeting to discuss activities of
the new Bike Wheaton Festival and identify and assign responsibilities for DWA and the Wheaton Bike
Committee.
Bike Safety Video: The City communications department has finalized the bike safety video with a link on the
Bike Committee web page. This video will be used as an educational tool. Jim Knasel will attend the District
200 PTA meeting to encourage use in the schools.
National Bike Month events:
National Bike/Walk to School Day on May 6;
Bike Safety classes at Wheaton Park District on May 9;
Bike to Work week May 11 – 15;
Library display Bike Month information;
Proclamation by the City for Bike Month in May – tentatively scheduled for the April 6 City Council Meeting.
The library has requested bike maps and other literature for a Bike Month display.
Bike Safety Classes - May 9, 2015: Laurel reported that the Bicycle Safety classes are in the spring catalog for
the Wheaton Park District. Once she has the registrations in she may need help teaching the classes.
Bike to School – May 6, 2015: Jim Knasel will lead the effort to promote the National Bike/Walk to School day
in the School District 200. The committee’s goal is to increase the number of schools participating in 2015.
Taste of Wheaton Bike Valet – June 6: The group has agreed to provide bike valet service on Saturday, June 6,
the entire day during daylight hours from 6:30 am – 8:00 pm. As Dennis is moving out of town Michelle has
taken on the responsibility of primary contact for the event. Karen will make a form to use for committee
members to sign up to work the event.
4th of July Parade – July 4: The committee decided not to add a presence at the Parade due to many other
activities already planned this spring and summer.
New Committee members: Dennis Beemer and David Crooks have resigned from the committee due to
relocation and work conflicts. It was decided to start recruiting more members with outreach through the City
and committee members.
