Bike Festival 2017 (recap) - Paula Barrington from the Downtown Wheaton Association was in attendance and believes
that we had a good turn-out by the public for the ride & festival as well as the number of vendors in attendance.
Discussed was the speakers, as most felt that they weren’t loud enough for all of the pre-ride announcements. We
talked about placing the speakers in the middle of the pack of riders instead of out front and possibly getting better
speakers. Paula also believed that we should find volunteers or hire young adults for the setup of the vendors tables
and chairs in the morning as it was a chore to do the setup ourselves. We believe that the Bike Rodeo was cluttered and
backed-up, but that could have been due to the children not being directed properly. Next year we will have to make
sure that we have coverage there to direct children that there is no defined order for how they complete the tasks. We
also discussed changing the categories for the Bicycle Decorating contest to the following: 1 year olds - 9 year olds; 10
year olds up to 17 year olds; Adult category and a Group category. Talked about having more bicycle safety materials
at our table since we are the hosts of the day. Trying to figure out how to get the marching band in two locations during
the ride so that they can be heard by everyone instead of just being at the start of the ride. Decided the date for next
years Bike Festival will be Saturday August 11th.
Overall, the approximate numbers for the 2017 Bike Festival are as follows; 130 riders, 200 people in the park, 50
children signed up for the Bike Rodeo, 11 bicycles donated to Working Bikes and 20 surveys filled out.
History Ride 2017 - the date for the History ride is Saturday September 23rd from 2pm - 4pm. Discussed meeting on the
west side of the Wheaton Public Library around 1:30pm. Nancy Flannery, the Chair of the Wheaton Historic
Commission, will be riding along and be speaking at each stop along the ride. For safety reasons, we opted not to stop
at the Wheaton Cemetery and to cross Roosevelt Road at Carlton Avenue instead of Gables. The committee decided
that someone should ride the route prior to the event and Dan Dlhy volunteered.
Illinois Prairie Path / Eola Connector Project - quickly discussed how the county is planning on connecting the Prairie
Pathy from the Batavia spur to the Aurora spur and brought in a map showing how the connection will be made.
Feather Signs - the budget of $120 to repair the stands for our signs was approved by the Environmental Improvement
Commission and was discussed that Dan Dlhy will reach out to the company to order new stands.
Bike / Walk to School (Fall) - the next Bike / Walk to School event will be taking place on October 4th.
