I. Call to Order
II. Approval of Minutes: No one had seen the August minutes, so this was skipped
III. Public Comment:
A. Introductions for two new candidates for the Wheaton Bicycle Advisory
Commission:
Dan Nielsen is a teacher. He rides bikes from mountain to trail to street. He bikes
to school every day and does 20-30 mi rides routinely. He organizes Bike to
School Day every year. He has a common frustration to cyclists: lack of respect
for bike riders on our roads.
Bob Van Valzah is a software engineer. He commutes to the train by bike and
from the train station to work by bike. He rides a 20 mi loop through the forest
preserves every other day and does a trip to Elgin on the weekend for about 500
mi/mo of riding.
Both Dan and Bob shared ideas for the bike committee, including starting
a “Divy” program in Wheaton, designating bike riding zones with green
paint lanes, and adding a QR Code to download the Wheaton Bike Map at
places like the bike racks and on the map itself
IV. Chair Report: None.
V. Ongoing Business:
2021 WBAC Budget – the members present agreed that a budget of $2,500
would be adequate for the 2021 year in order to fund more maps and a 2021
Bike Festival

BICYCLE ADVISORY COMMISSIONMEETING MINUTES
Month Date, Year
Bill, Rita, Nancy, Michelle will meet photographer at designated sites with
Dan doing the narration
Bicycling in Central Business District – “Walk Your Wheels Campaign”
we discussed this: everyone agrees that we should support the city code
against wheels on the new sidewalks; and everyone agrees that making
the streets safer for biking will help keep people off the walks. Rita and Bill
will support the French Market education event, but need specifics
including times/dates and material to distribute
Cycling Signage (Michelle)
City has started to remove incorrect signage and install new signage; let’s
take out wrong directions even if it takes a while to fix with new ones;
exception for Cantigny multipart signs – remove for now and Michelle will
keep track of the state of repair. Working with sign shop supervisor!
VI. New Business:
Can we find “Biking Around Wheaton” shirts for Dan (XL) and Bob (L)
