MINUTES Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission Tuesday, June 23, 2015 Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:35. Present were Kay McKeen, Piya Salgia, Hanna Self, Nancy Flynn, Bob Young, Tony Pope, Tony Majszak, and Phil Landrum. Absent were Nancy Allured, Cathy Coleman, and Joseph Wilmarth Tyna. Minutes: Bob moved that we accept the minutes of the May meeting. Tony Pope seconded. The minutes were approved. Public Comment: none Budget Report: Bob reported that $20,217.43 of the $20,500 total budget was spent, leaving $292.57. The only new expenditure this month was a bill of $80 for compost delivery at the Native Illinois Plant Sale. The EIC spent $875 for paper shredding for the Recycling Extravaganza, but the county should reimburse us $500 of that expenditure. Our budget for the new fiscal year is $21,500, and we briefly discussed ideas on how to spend the extra $1000. Other Reports: 1. Bike Committee Report: The bike valet at Taste of Wheaton was very successful since 169 people used this service. 2. Electronics Recycling: New Life Electronics is the new recycling company for the county. Tony Pope and Bob reported that New Life only sent 1 employee and not enough pallets, so the June 13th recycling event moved slowly. However, there were no particular problems. In the immediate future, each car can only drop off one TV. Upcoming Projects: 1. Adopt a Highway: July 18th @ 9:00 a.m. Please meet at Chick-Fil-A. 2. Electronics Recycling: July 11th & August 8th. Bob and Tony Pope will be crew chiefs. Unfinished Business: 1 .Helen Bartlett Memorial: Bob is working with Kevin Maloney, and a tree will probably be planted in the fall. 2 .Street Lamp Banners: possibly designed with clip art, a school contest, or the DuPage Art League 3. Bike Festival: August 8th, possibly bike banners? New Business: 1. Recycling: Kay toured the recycling plant in Elk Grove Village, and they get too many contaminants included in the recycling bins. Nine cents of each sticker price goes to recycling, and the re-sale market of recycling products has declined. 2. Dangerous crossing: Tony Majszak will try to get a stop sign added to the pedestrian/bike crossing at Washington/Prairie Path. Cars crossing the railroad tracks may not notice a biker flying across the street. Adjournment: Bob moved that the meeting be adjourned, Phil seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:40. There is not a July meeting, so the next regular EIC meeting is scheduled for August 25th, 2015, at 7:30 P.M. Respectfully submitted, Nancy Flynn
