MINUTES Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission Tuesday, June 28, 2016 Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Nancy Allured, Cathy Coleman, Nancy Flynn, Tony Majszak, Kay McKeen, Tony Pope, Christine Richarson, Hanna Self, Allison Torrence, and Bob Young. Arlan Schattke and Joseph Wilmarth Tyna were absent. Also in attendance were Thomas Schubert, City of Wheaton management intern, John Duguay, assistant city manager, Kate Vashkevich, a Wheaton resident, and Chris Rooney and Bob Pfister from Advanced Disposal. Minutes: Bob moved that we accept the minutes of the May meeting. Nancy Allured seconded. The minutes were approved. Public Comment: Advanced Disposal compared their proposal to Lakeshore. Budget Report: Bob reported that $190.73 was spent on the rain barrel for the library and recycling event expenses, leaving $5309.27 open to spend. Other Reports: 1. Bike Committee Report: Nancy Allured reported that they are working on plans for the Bike Festival on August 13. Working Bikes will collect bikes at the event, and there will be a bike parade. The bike valet at Taste of Wheaton was rained out. 2. Adopt a Highway: Nancy Flynn reported that the Democratic Party of Milton Township held a clean up on May 26; they picked up 9 bags of trash and 8 bags of recycling. 3. Recycling Report: Nancy, Kay, Joe, and Kate worked the June 11th event. New Life did not show up, so they closed at 10:30. People dropped off electronics even though there were signs that the event was cancelled. The police called New Life and they came and picked up those items. City workers who were helping close down the Taste of Wheaton collected 50-60 gallons of cooking oil for recycling. Upcoming Projects: 1. Electronic Recycling: Eworks begins collecting electronics in July. They will have four staff members at the collections. They will not accept everything that was taken before. Public works will take scrap metal for recycling. July 9th Bob, Tony Pope, Tony Majszak, Arlan, and Nancy Flynn will work. August 13th Bob, Tony Pope, Tony Majszak, and Joe will work. 2. Adopt a Highway: July 23, 8:30 am, meet at Chick.fil.A. Unfinished Business: 1. Waste Hauling Contract: Thomas Schubert presented the Lakeshore proposal and compared it to the current program. 2. Street Lamp Banners/Feather Signs--Design Contest: Tony Majszak will work on having the contest set up for the start of school. 3. EIC Mission Statement: Tony Majszak will put something together for August. 4. Library Donations in Honor and Appreciation of City Staff: Hana reported that the library staff had several suggestions. Bob moved that we amend the amount allocated to $125. Kay seconded. The motion carried. Bob will get a check to Betsy at the library and they will order the books. New Business: 1. Leaf Blowers: In response to a concern raised by a citizen, we do not feel we can take on this project at this time. 2. Telecommunications Equipment: a city email concerning this topic was sent out, and Tony Pope will investigate. Adjournment: Cathy moved that the meeting be adjourned. Nancy Flynn seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 9:15. The next regular EIC meeting is scheduled for August 23, 2016, at 7:30 P.M. Respectfully submitted, Cathy Coleman
