MINUTES Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission Tuesday, August 23, 2016 Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Nancy Allured, Cathy Coleman, Nancy Flynn, Tony Pope, Arlan Schattke, Hanna Self, Joseph Wilmarth Tyna. Absent were Shamili Ajgaonkar, Tony Majszak, Kay McKeen, Christine Richarson, Allison Torrence, and Bob Young. Also in attendance was Dan Dlhy, a member of the Bike Advisory Committee. Minutes: Joe moved that we accept the minutes of the June meeting. Nancy Allured seconded. The minutes were approved. Public Comment: none Budget Report: Bob reported by email that there were no expenditures, so there is still $5309.27 open to spend. Other Reports: 1. Bike Committee Report: Bike Committee Report: Nancy Allured and Dan Dlhy reported that the committee has three new members. The Bike Festival was held on August 13. In the morning the weather looked threatening, but it ended up being okay. 115 people participated in the parade, and they took a longer route. Next Yoga led stretching exercises before the parade. Prizes were awarded for bike decorations. The Police Department held a bike rodeo, and 50 kids went through the obstacle course. Officers also conducted safety inspections of bikes and helmets. The Elks Club gave away 35 helmets. The Downtown Wheaton Association provided bike bells and spoke beads which were distributed to children. Working Bikes collected 11 used bikes. Nancy commented that it is really helpful for the committee to partner with the Downtown Wheaton Association, because they have so much experience with hosting community events. 2. Electronic Recycling Report: Tony Pope reported: ●Saturday July 9th was probably one of our largest attended recycling events. Bob Young, Arlan Schattke, Tony Majszak, Nancy and Brent Flynn, and Tony Pope from EIC, Harry Miles and Jeff Gruba from S.C.A.R.C.E., and 6 employees from E Works manned the event. 349 vehicles- -283 vehicles from Wheaton, and the balance from 15 other communities. 16,636 pounds of electronics were collected.●Saturday August 13 Tony Pope, Bob Young, Joe Tyna, and 11 employees from E Works handled 327 cars and processed 20,531 pounds of electronics, approximately 60 -70 fluorescent bulbs, and collected about 5 gallons of cooking oil. 3. Adopt a Highway Report: Nancy Flynn reported: ●On July 23, Tony and Annette Pope and granddaughter Marissa, Bob, Kate, and Nancy and Brent Flynn collected 7 bags of garbage. ● On August 6, the Democratic Party of Milton Township picked up 7 bags of trash and 5 bags of recycling. Upcoming Projects: 1. Electronic Recycling: Joe will be crew chief September 10. Nancy Allured made a motion that we spend up to $100 for copies of the sheet explaining the new electronics program. Joe seconded. The motion carried. 2. Adopt a Highway: Nancy Flynn reported that the next EIC clean up will be held on September 24. Meet at 8:30 at Chick.fil.A. 3. Library programs: ●Kay sent information that on September 10 at 10 am a program will be held at the Wheaton Public Library to present the Earth Flag and Water Quality Flag the library has earned. The Wheaton library is the first in the state to receive the Water Quality Flag.●The library will be hosting three presentations about the new garbage program including what is accepted for recycling and what is not accepted and can contaminate the other items, and what is included in food scrap composting and how it will be handled. There will be a morning, afternoon, and evening program, and they will be held on September 21 from 7-8 pm, on September 26 from 1-2 pm, and on September 28 from 10-11 am. Unfinished Business: 1. Street Lamp Banners/Feather signs--Design Contest: tabled 2. EIC Mission Statement: tabled 3. Library Donations in Appreciation of city staff: Hanna said the library was ready to order the books as soon as they received the check, but one will not be available until December. New Business: 1. New Garbage Contract: Tony brought the press release about the new garbage contract, and Nancy Allured reported about the city council meeting where the contract was approved. Nancy said that Lakeshore did an excellent job of answering citizens' questions, and the city council thanked Advanced Disposal for the great job they have done. 2. Milkweed Planting: Cathy was contacted by a citizen about planting milkweed to provide food for monarch butterflies, as Glen Ellyn has done this. Members are interested in how Glen Ellyn accomplished this and would like more information. Hanna will contact the citizen. Adjournment: Nancy Flynn moved that the meeting be adjourned. Tony seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:15. The next regular EIC meeting is scheduled for September 27, 2016, at 7:30 P.M. Respectfully submitted, Cathy Coleman
