Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission
Tuesday, March 28, 2017
Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Nancy Allured, Cathy Coleman,
Nancy Flynn, Kay McKeen, Tony Pope, Christine Richarson, Hanna Self, Allison Torrence, Joseph Wilmarth
Tyna, and Bob Young. Absent were Shamili Ajgaonkar, Brittany Drummond, and Tony Majszak. Also in
attendance were Dan Dlhy, Brett Papievis, and Avery Papievis.
Minutes: Joe moved that we accept the minutes of the February meeting. Bob seconded. The minutes were
approved.
Public Comment: Dan Dlhy, the new chairman of the bike commitee, introduced himself to the commission.
Avery Papievis explained that he was attending the meeting as part of the requirements for a Boy Scout
Community Service Badge.
Budget Report: Bob reported that expenses to date have totaled $525.26, leaving $4974.74 open to spend.
Other Reports:
1. Bike Committee Report: Nancy reported that Dan will be taking over as chairman. The Bike Festival
is planned for August 12. Nancy moved that we allocate $152 to print 200 copies of the bike map, so
they can be available at bike events. Bob seconded. The motion carried.
2. Electronic Recycling Report: Joe reported that the March event was very cold. He, Allison, and Tony
Pope were there from EIC. Volunteers from SCARCE and COD were there, as well as employees
from EWorks. There were 335 cars, and 590 fluorescent bulbs and 4 gallons of cooking oil were
collected.
3. Adopt a Highway Report: Nancy Flynn reported that the next EIC clean up will be April 15 at 8:30.
Meet at Chick.fil.A.
4. Earth Day Proclamation: Ted reported that a proclamation for the April environmental events will be
presented at the April 3 City Council Meeting. Tony Pope will attend to receive the proclamation.
Upcoming Projects:
1. Electronic Recycling: Bob will chair electronics on April 8 and Joe will work with him.
2. Paper Shredding (April 8, 9-1): Kay will chair paper shredding. Ted, Tony Pope, and Allison will
assist her.
3. Foreign Language Film Festival (April 23): Kay reported that this will be held at Studio Movie Grill
at 11:30.
4. Arbor Day (April 28): Whittier School 10 a.m.
5. Illinois Prairie Path Clean Up (April 29): Christine reported that most of the areas are assigned and
emails have gone out to those signed up.
6. Native Plant Sale (April 29): Hanna reported that Annette has volunteers for Friday set up and
Saturday sale, but they hope to have more.
Unfinished Business:
1. Street Lamp Banners/Feather Signs-Design Contest: no report
2. Library Books: Hanna has been working with Nancy from Wheaton Public Library. Email any
material suggestions to Hanna.
New Business:
1. EIC Events Funding: no requests
2. Banner Funding: tabled
3. New Law: Kay reported that a bill passed in the Illinois House banning from recycling bins
styrofoam, styrene, plastic bags, syringes, and various items that clog the machines and require
shutdowns or are hazardous to workers.
4. Cooking Oil: Kay reported that the project has been made available to communities statewide.
Adjournment: Nancy Allured moved that the meeting be adjourned. Allison seconded. The meeting was adjourned
at 8:15. The next regular EIC meeting is scheduled forApril 25, 2017, at 7:30 P.M.
