MINUTES Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission Tuesday, May 22, 2018 Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:40. Present were, Nancy Allured, Nancy Flynn, Tony Majszak, Kay McKeen, Allison Torrence and Bob Young. Absent were Shamili Ajgaonkar, Cathy Coleman, Tony Pope, David Popham, and Christine Richardson. Minutes: Bob moved that we accept the minutes of the April meeting. Nancy Flynn seconded. The minutes were approved. Public Comment: none Budget Report: Bob reported that the year to date expenses totaled $17,020.98, leaving $4,479.02 open to spend. Expenses include the native plant sale and not the paper shredding event as of this date. Other Reports: 1. Adopt a Highway Report: Nancy Flynn reported on the May 5 cleanup. Five bags were collected along Butterfield. Next cleanup is July 7 at 8:00 am. 2. Arbor Day: A red oak was planted at Franklin Middle School on April 27 3. Prairie Path Clean Up (April 28): Christine reported that there were so many volunteers that we were not only able to cover the Prairie Path's Elgin, Aurora, and Main Spurs, but we also cleaned the Great Western Trail, the Klein Creek Spur, and the Community Park in North Wheaton. In addition, we hit a few roads including County Farm Rd, Geneva Rd, and Butterfield Rd and the mess behind the Jewel on Main St. Totals are 125 people, 71 bags of trash and 29 bags of recycling. 4. Electronic Recycling Report: On Saturday, May 12, the EIC was represented by Tony Majszak and Tony Pope. Three volunteers from Wheaton-Warrenville South, four volunteers from North Central College and one from Franklin Middle School. There were 319 vehicles with electronics, in addition there were 517 fluorescent light bulbs and approximately 5 gallons of cooking oil were also recycled. 5. Native Plant Sale (April 28): Tony Pope reported that they had a small drop in customers this year to 227. The quality of the plants was higher. 6. Library book donations: The Wheaton Public Library sent a letter thanking the EIC for the donation of environmental materials to the library. Upcoming Projects: 1. Electronic Recycling (June 9): Bob Young will be crew chief. This date is subject to change depending on the city’s plans to have work done at the public works yard this summer, and it will probably require the cancellation of one monthly recycling collection. Unfinished Business: 1. Nurse’s Closet Medical Equipment Reuse: still looking for a location. New Business: 1. The commission held the annual elections and re-elected Ted Witte as Commission Chair, Cathy Coleman as Secretary, and Bob Young as Treasurer. 2. EIC Annual Report: the final report is due to the City by June 16. 3. Green Fair (September 15): There will be a green fair at the DuPage Fairgrounds coming up in September. The event may include paper shredding, scrap metal and electronic recycling, and a kick-off of the “clean up the world” and “Pick up 5” programs to eliminate litter. Adjournment: Bob moved that the meeting be adjourned. Allison seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:15. The next regular EIC meeting is scheduled for June 26, 2018, at 7:30 P.M.
