MINUTES
Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission
Tuesday, June 26, 2018
Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Nancy Allured, Cathy Coleman,
Kay McKeen, Tony Pope, Christine Richardson, Allison Torrence, and Bob Young. Absent were Shamili
Ajgaonkar, Nancy Flynn, Tony Majszak, and David Popham.
Minutes: Kay moved that we accept the minutes of the May meeting. Bob seconded. The minutes were approved.
Public Comment: none
Budget Report: Bob reported that for the last fiscal year, we spent $17,820.98 of a $21,500 budget, or 83%. Our
budget from now till January 1 is $1000.
Other Reports:
1. Electronic Recycling Report: Tony Pope, Bob, Nancy Allured, Nancy Flynn, and 8 EWorks
employees worked the event. They were unable to count cars. Someone had a battery that EWorks
does not take, and the person behind them owns Batteries Plus in Glen Ellyn. He said they take car,
truck, marine, and sump pump batteries for recycling. The cooking oil container was full and was
collected.
2. Adopt a Highway Report: Nancy Flynn emailed that The Democratic Party of DuPage County held a
clean up on May 26, and they collected 8 bags of trash and 6 bags of recyclables. Next EIC clean up
is scheduled for July 7.
3. Native Plant Sale: Tony reported that they spent $$16,131 and collected $15,679. They are reviewing
what sold well, what didn’t sell, and what sold out very quickly, so they can adjust orders
accordingly.
Upcoming Projects:
1. Electronic Recycling (July 14): Bob and Tony Pope will be there. Due to construction at the Public
Works yard area, the August event will be cancelled. Bob moved that we spend up to $50 on a half
sheet to let people know that the August event will be cancelled, and to provide information about the
bike festival and Green Fair.
2. Green Fair/Clean Up the World Day (September 15): Kay reported that this event will be held at the
DuPage County Fairgrounds. They plan to have paper shredding, a mini recycling extravaganza
including ReStore, and a song for Pick Up 5 litter clean up. Kay got a grant for 1000 storm sewer
medallions to be installed countywide. She would like volunteers to be trained to attach them to storm
drains in time for Clean Up the World Day. Kay also reported that ReStore has a new service where
they will come in and remove kitchen cabinets which are being donated and haul them away.
Unfinished Business:
1. Nurses’ Closet Medical Equipment Re-use: Kay found a group called Project Cure located in
Woodridge who will accept medical equipment. They send it out of the country to groups that need it.
While this does not achieve the goal of making it available for borrowing, it is a place where people
can donate equipment rather than throwing it away.
New Business:
1. Drains to River Medallion Funding: none needed
2. Honorary Tree Funding: Longtime EIC members Myrt Russell and Phil Landrum passed away this
year. We would like to plant trees in their honor, and we will table this until next year’s budget.
Adjournment: Allison moved that the meeting be adjourned. Bob seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:40.
The next regular EIC meeting is scheduled for August 28, 2018, at 7:30 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Coleman
