Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission
Tuesday, August 28, 2018
Roll Call: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Shamili Ajgaonkar, Nancy
Allured, Cathy Coleman, Kay McKeen, Tony Pope, David Popham, Christine Richardson, and Bob Young.
Absent were Nancy Flynn, Tony Majszak, and Allison Torrence.
Minutes: Bob moved that we accept the minutes of the June meeting. Kay seconded. The minutes were approved.
Public Comment: none
Budget Report: Bob reported that the year to date expenses totaled $26.25, leaving $973.75 open to spend.
Other Reports:
1. Electronic Recycling Report:●Tony Pope previously emailed that on Saturday July14th, he, Bob
Young, Nancy Allured, Nancy Flynn, and six employees from E Works unloaded 233 vehicles. Top
communities were Wheaton—193, Glen Ellyn—13, Winfield—7, Carol Stream--6. Some residents
refused to pay to recycle TVs/monitors. 195 fluorescent light bulbs and less than 5 gallons of cooking
oil were also recycled. *Bob Young passed leaflets advising residents that the August 11th Recycling
Event will be relocated to the public parking lot at Liberty and Carlton.● Bob reported that the
August 11th event was held in the commuter parking lot. It went very smoothly, and EWorks
provided plenty of help. More than 300 cars went through with minimal traffic concerns on Liberty.
2. Adopt a Highway Report: ●Tony Pope, Nancy Allured, Nancy and Brent Flynn, and David and
sons Zach and Alex collected 7 bags of trash on July 7 along Butterfield Road.
●Nancy Flynn emailed possible dates for the next clean up, and 9/29 was when most people were
available.
Upcoming Projects:
1. Electronic Recycling: September event will be held at Green Fair from 10-1.
2. Green Fair/Clean Up the World Day (September 15): Kay reported that all events will be outside.
They are working on signs, especially for recycling extravaganza. They will be taking electronics,
propane tanks, and many other items. PNC Bank is sponsoring paper shredding, and the paper will be
shredded off-site.
Unfinished Business:
1. Nurses’ Closet Medical Equipment Reuse: Kay reported that the group SCARCE is working with is
now located in Woodridge. It is run by volunteers, so there is very limited access. The collected items
are shipped out of the country.
2. Drains to River Medallions: Kay brought an example of the medallion. They are looking for groups or
families to choose an area, watch the video for directions, and install them. There are 1000 for all of
DuPage County, so they are looking to spread them out, especially in areas where they will be seen.
The goal is to have diverse groups installing them, so the concept is spread by the medallions and by
word of mouth. The hope is to have all 1000 installed by October 18, the anniversary of the Clean
Water Act.
New Business: The city staff brought it to the EIC’s attention that a group of concerned residents near
Washington School is trying to find out why all the plants in their retention pond have died. They have been
unable to determine what company sprayed it, what was used, and who hired them. This pond drains to Northside
Park.
Adjournment: Nancy moved that the meeting be adjourned. Bob seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30.
The next regular EIC meeting is scheduled for September 25, 2018, at 7:30 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Coleman
