Tuesday, April 27, 2021 7:30 I. Call to Order: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present in person were Cathy Coleman, Nancy Flynn, Brian McKee, Kay McKeen, Tony Pope, Allison Torrence, and Bob Young. Present on Zoom was David Popham. Absent were Shamili Ajgaonkar, Tony Majszak, and Christine Richardson. II. Approval of Minutes: Bob moved that the minutes from the March meeting be approved. Tony seconded. The minutes were approved by unanimous voice vote. III. Budget Report: Bob reported that there are no new expenditures. The bills from the special events will be coming in soon. IV. Public Comment: None V. Reports: 1. Recycling Extravaganza: Kay reported the totals for the April 10 event. Sheriff: 4- 30 gallon bins of medications - 149.5 lbs; 4 boxes and 3 bins of syringes & EpiPens - 94 lbs Flat Can: 125 paint cans; 30 other aerosol cans - 155 lbs total Cooking Oil: 45 gallons - 337.5 lbs e-Works: 4,555 pounds of textiles; 1,350 pounds of scrap metal; 22,342 pounds of electronics Amerigas: 30 small propane canisters - 30 lbs; 12 large propane canisters - 300 lbs Accurate Doc Destruction: 30,160 pounds Earth Paint: 450 gallons; 176 quarts; 15 pails; 641 containers total - 3000 pounds SCARCE: 3 gaylords of good books - 2,118.4 lbs; 4 black bins for recycling - 2,824.5 lbs; 1 box of keys; 3 boxes of school supplies; 7 boxes of Christmas lights; 1 box of VHS Tapes; 1 box of CD's; 2 boxes of medical supplies; 2 boxes of ink cartridges; 2 boxes of Brita Filters; 3 Brita pitchers; 108 lbs total; 3 musical instruments 30 lbs; 20 boxes of records 700 lbs; 6.8 lbs. of X-rays Interstate Battery: 2,250 lbs of SLA Batteries; 10 lbs. of misc. batteries Lions Club: 618 eyeglasses 47 lbs Working Bikes: 41 Bikes 738lbs; plus wheels, tires, frames, and helmets. 71,305.70 pounds TOTAL 2. Adopt a Highway: Nancy reported that on March 27 she, her husband Brent, Bob, Tony P and his wife Annette, Ted, Brian, Dave and his son Zach, and Christine's son Aiden collected 11 bags, and the area looked good when they left. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES April 27, 2021 3. Native Plant Sale: Tony reported that the outside location worked great, especially since it didn’t rain. The cost of the plants was $17,070.66 and $18,413.77 was collected at the event. 4. Green Citizen Award Presentation: Kay reported that Kevin Maloney and Mary Vieregg were announced as EIC’s first Green Citizen Award honorees, and Kevin was able to attend the City Council meeting to receive his certificate. VI. Upcoming Projects: 1. Electronics Recycling (May 8): Bob and David will work this event. 2. Arbor Day (April 30): Jefferson Preschool 10 am. Legat, the architectural firm that designed the building, is donating a second tree to be planted at the event. VII. Unfinished Business: 1. Nurses’ Closet: Nancy is communicating with Susan Bishel about how the specifics will be handled. 2. Battery Recycling: Kay reported that she is communicating with two companies, but she does not want batteries stored at the yard area. Haz-chem will charge $1.75/lb. of unsorted batteries and will pick them up. There is a $90 transportation fee, so they suggest charging $2/lb. We would probably schedule a special event to see how it works and to collect enough batteries to offset the transportation cost. 3. Green Citizen 2022 planning: tabled VIII. New Business: 1. Adopt a Highway: May 15 at 8am. 2. EIC election of officers: Ted as Chair, Bob as Treasurer, and Cathy as Secretary were reelected by unanimous voice vote. 3. Annual Report due June 15: Tony and Allison have pictures from events to share. 4. Funding for EIC events: none needed at this time. IX. Adjournment: Bob moved that the meeting be adjourned.
