Environmental Improvement Commission

Tuesday, June 22, 2021 7:30 I. Call to Order: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:35. Present in person were Cathy Coleman, Nancy Flynn, Seema Wadia, and Bob Young. Present on Zoom were Shamili Ajgaonkar and Brian McKee. Absent were Tony Majszak, Kay McKeen, Tony Pope, David Popham, Christine Richardson, and Allison Torrence. II. Approval of Minutes: Bob moved that the minutes from the May meeting be approved. Nancy seconded. The minutes were approved by unanimous voice vote. III. Budget Report: Bob reported that expenses to date total $18,533.45, leaving $2966.55 open to spend. IV. Public Comment: None V. Reports: 1. Electronic Recycling (June 12): Bob reported that he, Nancy, and Tony Majszak from EIC, Jim from SCARCE, and 5 eWorks employees collected about 200 bulbs, 30 gallons of cooking oil, scrap metal, and electronics. The traffic flow was fairly steady, but slower than usual. Items were dumped, and some were hazardous waste. 2. Library Books: Bob worked with Morton Arboretum and Wheaton Public Library to choose books about trees in honor of Kevin Maloney’s retirement. The books that were purchased are:  Brosnan, Kathleen City of Lake and Prairie  Cook, Diane Wise Trees  Harrison, Christina Remarkable Trees  Hobbs, Kevin and David West The Story of Trees and How They Changed the Way We Live  Kershaw, Linda Trees of Illinois  Lemniscates, Carme Trees  Leonardi, Cesare The Architecture of Trees  Wells, Diana Lives of Trees; An Uncommon History VI. Upcoming Projects: 1. Electronics Recycling (July 10, August 14): Tony Pope will work the July event, and Tony Pope and David will work the August event. 2. Adopt a Highway: Nancy scheduled the next clean up, EIC’s third for the year, for July 17. Volunteers will meet at Chick∙fil∙A at 8am. VII. Unfinished Business: 1. Nurses’ Closet: Nancy reported that Mike Dzugan showed her a space at city hall that would work for the project. We talked about ideas on how to collect medical equipment and distribute it.  ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES June 22, 2021 Nancy has been in contact with the woman who runs this program in Palatine, and she had good suggestions. 2. New Green Plan/Strategic Plan: Shamili designed a preliminary application and certificate. She will share these with members again for discussion at our next meeting. 3. Battery Recycling: tabled VIII. New Business: Funding for EIC events: none needed IX. Adjournment: Bob moved that the meeting be adjourned. Seema seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:10.
