ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENTCOMMISSION MEETING MINUTES WHEATON CITY HALL, 303 W WESLEY STREET, WHEATON, ILLINOIS 60187 Tuesday, January 23, 2024 7:30 I. Call to Order: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30. Present were Cathy Coleman, Nancy Flynn, Brian Malone, Tony Pope, David Popham, Allison Torrence, and Bob Young. Absent were Kay McKeen, Stephen Siemer, Seema Wadia, and Jim Wozniak. II. Approval of Minutes: Tony moved that the minutes from the December meeting be approved. Nancy seconded.The minutes were approved by unanimous voice vote. III. Budget Report: Bob did not have the new budget information yet. IV. Public Comment: none V. Reports: 1. Electronics Recycling (January 13): for the first time in 10 years, except for the beginning of COVID, the recycling event was cancelled. The terrible weather and the need for city trucks to access the salt bins would have made it dangerous. VI. Upcoming Projects: 1. Electronics Recycling (February 10): Bob and David will be crew chiefs. VII. Unfinished Business: 1. Recycling Extravaganza (April 13): no report 2. Native Plant Sale (April 27): Tony has applied for the permit. Annette sent out an email for volunteers and 13 people volunteered for Friday and 14 for Saturday. 3. lllinois Prairie Path Clean Up (April 27): no report VIII. NewBusiness: 1. Election of Officers: Ted—Chairman,Bob—Treasurer,Cathy—Secretaryby unanimous voice vote. 2. Funding for EIC Events: none needed 3. Recycle Series with City Communications Department: a number of agenda items are topics we would like to create a PSA about for this series 4. Spring pollinator awareness education: PSA 5. Single Use Plastic Bag Education: PSA 6. Bioswale/Rain Gardens/Permeable Pavers/Storm Water Education: PSA 7. Composting Education: include options from Lakeshore PSA 8. Scented Dryer Sheets: pollinators, fire safety issue PSA 9. Increase tree planting education: PSA 10. Business composting research: no report 11.
