ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES
WHEATON CITY HALL, 303 W WESLEY STREET, WHEATON, ILLINOIS 60187

I. Call to Order: Chairman Ted Witte called the meeting to order at 7:30.
Present were Cathy Coleman, Nancy Flynn, Brian Malone, Kay McKeen, Tony Pope, Stephen Siemer,
Jim Wozniak, and Bob Young. Absent were Jim Boak, David Popham, Allison Torrence, and Seema
Wadia. Daniel Malone, a college student and Brian's son, was also in attendance.
II. Approval of Minutes:
Steve moved that the minutes from the April meeting be approved. Bob seconded. The minutes were
approved by unanimous voice vote.
III. Budget Report:
Bob reported that expenditures to date equal $25,977.28, leaving $9772.72 open to spend. The
plants for the Native Plant Sale cost $23,877, the rental for the DuPage County Fairgrounds for the
Recycling Extravaganza was $500, and the shredding trucks were $1600.
IV. Public Comment: None
V. Reports:
1. Adopt a Highway: Nancy reported that Tony, Bob, and her husband Brent cleaned the highway
with her on May 25 and collected 4 bags. Nancy scheduled the 3 clean up forJuly 27, 8am at
Chick-fil-A.
2. Arbor Day at Monroe Middle School (April 26): Kay reported that a white oakwas planted, the
chorus sang, and a student gave a very nice speech.
3. Native Ptant Sale (April 27): Tony reported that sales totaled $24,481, but the charge for credit
cards still needs to be deducted.
4. lllinois Prairie Path Clean Up (April 27): tt went well, lots of votunteers, path was atready fairly
clean. Suggestions for next year are cleaning up behind PADS day shelter and school
playgrounds—possiblycontacting schools to see ifthey would like to coordinate with the path
clean up.
5. International Composting Week (May 5-12): Kay reported that SCARCE has food scrap amended
compost available. More publicity is needed.
6. Electronics Recycling (May II): ): Tony reported that he, David Popham, and Steve Siemer
represented EIC, along with volunteer Jim Truesdale, and four workers from E-Works. Items
collected included lots of electronics, a significant amount of clothing, textiles, and shoes, and
much scrap metal. Because no fluorescent bulbs or cooking oil were recycled in April, there was a
large number of bulbs (300+) this month, approximately 5 gallons of cooking oil, and a dozen
smoke alarms.
VI. Upcoming Projects:
1. Electronics Recycling (June 8): Tony, Bob, David, Steve, and Nancy plan to be there.

1. City Video Hazardous Waste (Kay): still in planning
2. Review of Recycling Extravaganza lessons to prepare for 2025 event: meeting in February or
March; identify key people especially to guide participants in the right direction
VIII. New Business:
1. FundingforEIC Events
2. Bob moved that we donate $200 to Wheaton Public Library to purchase environmental materials
for the children's department. Cathy seconded. The motion was approved by unanimous voice
vote.
IX. Adjournment:
Bob moved that the meeting be adjourned. Cathy seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:12.
The next regular EIC meeting is scheduled for June 25, 2024, at 7:30 P.M.
